Looking for a nykr, or nix. My mother used to scare me with Nøkken. It was the first spirit I heard of (beside Jesus)

Yes, it’s bad, he drowns people but (she didn't tell me 😤) he can also teach you tunings on the fiddle that force people to dance all night 😅

Nymphaea alba. Hvit nøkkerose in Norwegian. Leaves and flowers floating on a lake. There are small waves making the scene a bit unrestful. The sunlight is reflected in the leaves, making them look white.

What on earth is this?

A small, hand pulled cable ferry.

And yes, I did go back and forth. Fun but a lot of work.
Small, wooden, cable ferry, viewed from to dock, looking out over the river. The ferry is labelled, Nøkken. Trees and the other dock on the other side. Same ferry viewed from the other side with cables lying in the water.

Nattfiolen sender duften ut i bleke natte-luften. Dette kan vel ingen love: å bruke natten til å sove!»

I've talked about this before but Theodor Kittelsen's Nøkken. Saw it in a museum over a decade ago and still think about it a lot.

At the Reflecting Pool, and guys, this doesn't look right
"Nøkken", an 1892 painting by Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen. It shows a calm pond in yellow twilight, with leaves on the surface and a reflection of a pine forest. In the middle, something that looks like a pile of twigs with two glowing eyes peeks above the surface.

Have some more! His work's been especially helpful as style studies. He's done a lot of work as a story illustrator, and most of it can be found at the Norwegian national gallery's website! www.nasjonalmuseet.no/samlingen/so...
Drawing of a woman, presumably married and old, sweeping behind a house built of lumber. She is turned away, showing her crouched back to the viewer while steeped in the shadow of the house. Snow sparsely covers the roof, the ground and a nearby rockface. A rake leans upright against it. It's raining. A portrait sketch of an old man. His mouth is slightly agape and his nose is dripping. A comic-like illustration of Nøkken playing a harp made of natural materials. The title is "Nøkken sings on the big blue sea". Nøkken is partially out of the water in order to play the harp: its arms are large and trunk-like, clumsily playing the instrument. Nøkken is looking at the viewer with its mouth slightly agape, its grass-like hair covering most of its body. It's actually pretty cute. Pencil drawing of a man conversing with a much older woman, seen from the waist up. They are both dressed like late 1800s nordic commonfolk: she's wearing a scarf wrapped over her head, a cape draped over her shoulders, and she's carrying a large basket with a lid; the man is wearing a buttoned sweater, a neckerchief and a hat. He looks to be bothering her, as she clutches the basket defensively, while he wears a mopey expression.

It's hard to name just one, but I gotta go for my guy Theodor Kittelsen. Norwegian painter and artist with an insane style range. He's basically the originator for how we portray Norwegian myths and cryptids. I love his use of texture and color value.
Question from an anonymous person over the NGL app: "Name an artist who's been a big inspiration for your own art?" Drawing by Theodor Kittelsen of a Norwegian figure in myth called Nøkken. Nøkken is a spirit, of sorts, looking like an unsettling, humanoid-shaped pile of twigs, water plants and debris. It's seen sticking its glowing eyes up from under the surface of a lake. The afternoon sun shines yellow in the reflection of the water. The reflection of the forest line bathes Nøkken in shadow. It's implied that the viewer is standing just on the edge of the water. Painting by Theodor Kittelsen. Nøkken, having transformed into a beautiful, white horse to lure people to ride on it, is jumping head first into the lake from the previous picture with a person on its back. The gleaming, white horse stands in contrast to the less saturated, darker forest background. Drawing by Theodor Kittelsen of a massive troll. The troll is only seen from the collarbone and up, gray and textured like moss, save for the one, glowing eye peeking out from under his bangs. He is covered with trees and foliage, the first of which is growing from his head and shoulders. A large, crooked nose covers a thick-growing mustache. The sun stands high in the sky, which is a pale, grayish blue.
