I don’t think they did themselves any favors by their very conservative statements at public meetings. But their traffic study was still in development & they’d committed at least verbally to mitigating any bikeway impacts to NACTO standards, which would’ve meant even more diverters & cycletracks.

Greenville’s city penny tax list includes a $5M congestion-relief project for Pleasantburg Drive (Tier 2).

Since it’s a state highway, redesigning it would require a partnership with SCDOT. What could that partnership build using the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide?

Expanding on @jahorne.bsky.social's point about rolling or taking transit: NACTO Dutch-style protected intersection geometry with 10-to-15-foot corner radii and 10-minute bus headways turns a 1-mile grocery run into a safe 6-minute trip.
You shouldn't need a gallon of gas just to get a gallon of milk! Yet, that is the only viable option most Americans have. That's not freedom. That's car dependency. True freedom means having the power to choose how you get around—whether that’s walking, rolling, taking transit, or driving.

When Henn Co gave their first presentation on Hennepin from Washington to the bridge, I asked whether there were more conflict points with their design or with a lane all the way to the right. They insisted "they didn't know." Well NACTO confirms my sense that their design was the literal worst one
