Record winter rains and cooler conditions along South Africa’s west coast are setting up Namaqualand for one of its most spectacular wildflower seasons in years.

Submission for the 2023 Solarpunk City Art Collaboration. The bioregion depicted is the Deserts and Xeric Shrublands of Namaqualand, South Africa, a desert famous for its unique ability to change from a dusty wasteland into a very lush wildflower field after the first rains of spring. This is set just after the rains. The buildings featured are Ndebele-style homes, which are made of cob and straw. They are excellent for the environment of South Africa and trap heat in their walls during the very hot days and release this heat in the frigid nights.

Record-breaking winter rain brings Namaqualand's most spectacular superbloom in years, as millions of wildflowers blanket the Northern Cape.
