One reason I'm so opposed to early selection is it means the sorting process is essentially done in advance by teachers/parents and so kids aren't even given a chance on the route that leads to the high status and well paid jobs.

sorry, it actually doesn't - research from my colleagues showed this. "Less academically gifted" students (i.e. working class) are identified by teachers and they take fewer subjects, and more at Nat4 level, which then screws them in later life

Hahaha. There is, effectively, no access to exams for home educated kids in Scotland. So much coursework in Nat4/5s that it’s impossible to do as an outside candidate. People tend to do GCSEs and travel to English exam centres, at great expense.

The good news is that advantage and disadvantage are just linearly skewed (nat1 is 1/400, nat2 is 3/400, nat3 is 5/400, nat4 is 7/400, etc, and disadvantage is the opposite skew) so your line of best fit just needs to accommodate how many more times advantage was rolled than disadvantage.
