NATO leaders announced significant arms deals totaling tens of billions of dollars ahead of a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing increased defense spending and collaboration with allies. The agreements, unveiled at a defense forum in Ankara, include purchases of surveillance drones from Northrop Grumman and planes from Saab. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte highlighted the importance of collective action, noting that European allies have boosted defense budgets to around 4% of GDP. The U.S. is also exploring joint production of missiles with Germany and other nations to address supply shortages for Ukraine. Trump's criticism of Europe's defense contributions intensified following the Iran conflict, prompting NATO members to reaffirm support for Ukraine with a pledged €70-billion aid package in 2026. Meanwhile, tensions persist over Turkey's potential reentry into the F-35 fighter program after sanctions were imposed for acquiring Russian S-400 systems. The summit aims to strengthen transatlantic defense ties amid ongoing conflicts and geopolitical shifts.
