Unbelievably exciting news, a Greater mouse-eared bat has been found during an #NBMP hibernation survey in Dover! This is the first record of this species in Kent since 1985.
Well done Claire and huge thanks to @fionamathews.bsky.social and Dr John Puckett for helping to confirm ID

January's NBMP Hibernation Surveys are in full swing, with many sites yielding good numbers of hibernating bats. Thank you to all licence holders and volunteers for carrying out these vital surveys.

🦇 How are bat populations doing in the UK? A Bat Conservation Trust report on UK’s bat species, published in May 2024, showed nature can recover, given the right opportunity. But there are worrying signs of change which require more data collection to understand:

It's thanks to bat groups and other national bat monitoring program citizen scientists that we can monitor how 11 out of our 18 resident bat species are doing www.bats.org.uk/news/2025/05...

In the UK, legal protection and conservation actions have played a critical role in allowing bat populations to begin to recover from historical declines. We still have a long way to go which is why it is essential these efforts continue. www.bats.org.uk/news/2026/06...

Another ‘liking bats gets you to amazing places’ post. Last night was this medieval yeoman’s house with wildflower meadows and c.100 Lesser horseshoes, and today a smaller roost at an RHS garden. @batconservation.bsky.social #NBMP

Thank you for sharing this stunning drawing @bzillustrations.bsky.social. Thanks to every volunteer... bat carers, ambulance drivers, roost visitors, national bat helpline volunteers, NBMP citizen scientists and everyone else who help to protect bats. Without you we would be nothing. #VolunteerWeek

Hibernation checks today with Devon Bat Group as part of the @batconservation.bsky.social NBMP monitoring scheme. Always nice to look at horseshoe bats, and hibernation checks really help with the bat season withdrawal symptoms!

Great hibernation survey today. We’ve been monitoring roost sites and recording the findings for many years as part of the @batconservation.bsky.social NBMP. All important data to keep track of the status of the UK’s bats.

🦇 I thought I'd try and film the Soprano pipistrelles foraging over the Royal Military Canal last night as part of the @batconservation.bsky.soc NBMP Sunrise/Sunset Survey, and this little one decided he was ready for his close up 😆

The NBMP Waterway Survey may not lead to great social media content, but we did see quite a few Daubenton’s!
August 15, 2025 at 10:00 PM
A blurry common pipistrelle we saw tonight. Didn't get any Daubenton's bats unfortunately (I've recorded them here before). I'll keep looking out for them though! NBMP surveys are a great way to connect with nature! Check out @batconservation.bsky.social to get involved! #bats #britishbats
