They say this is a
Royal Hickory Moth.
Wingspan was about 5" or 6". Beautiful wings.
Saw him hanging outside the library today. Wish I'd seen it as a caterpillar.

It's the end of April and the deer living around me still have their dark gray winter coats. This one was so quiet I didn't notice her until I was right next to where she stood in the woods. In four or five weeks, we should be seeing cute little fawns with caramel brown hides and white spots. Much easier to see.

Very bright pink flower with lots of curled petals. I think this is a dahlia or a chrysanthemum. The center of the flower has a yellow red hue and the outer edges are purpley red. It's full and gorgeous and blooming mid-october in North Carolina. This picture shows a bunch of these flowers clustered together.

Haiku: splashing and wiggling above this year's spawning bed carp gettin' busy This carp is about 9 or 10 inches long. It was seen on May 4, 2026, floating and swerving with several other fish in a lake in North Carolina. A friend who fishes a lot says males and females thrash together in shallow, weedy water to release and fertilize eggs, which then stick to submerged vegetation or gravel. The eggs will hatch in 3-8 days, depending how warm the water is.
