What a remarkable needlewoman your grandmother was. And what a gift to be given! Thank you for showing us.

Here is my origin story. It’s a story about activism I did when I was nine. I saw that my brother’s Cub Scout badge book had different badges (Explorer, scientist) to my Brownie badge book (cook, needlewoman). And I was annoyed. I showed it to my dad and he said “let’s write a letter to the Times.”

‘A catte'

An embroidered panel, depicting a ginger cat with a mouse on a chequered floor, bearing the cipher of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary, executed 8 Feb 1587, was a skilled needlewoman. #InternationalCatDay (Royal Collection Trust, HM CIII)

Mother Strange and her sisters were devoted needlewoman and seamstress, I got a lot by osmosis.

Embroidered casket, 1678, English. The embroiderer probably took the scenes from contemporary prints. She left her initials "E C" picked out in seed pearls on the lid. Catalogue notes that this may stand for "Elizabeth Coombe, a celebrated needlewoman". (V&A Museum, London)

Jane Austen was an excellent needlewoman, as they called it in her day. She was said to be especially good at embroidery, particularly satin stitch. Looking forward to reading this issue!
Thrilled to have my article (Letters, Needles and Novels) in the spring 2025 issue of Piecework which is devoted to Jane Austen. It's full of wonderful articles and projects. To purchase a print or digital copy visit pieceworkmagazine.com. #janeausten #needlework #fashion #knitting #regency

I had to double check and apparently Mrs Cosmopolite was a needlewoman and the reasonably priced love would be found elsewhere

I'd like to share this absolutely wonderful gift from Penny Hill, skilled needlewoman and expert on embroidery, fabrics and much more besides. If you're at World Fantasy Convention 2025 more of her work will be in the art show, and I highly recommend you make time to visit!
