I got home from Neilah and the absentee ballot was in my mailbox. Out the next morning. Confirmed receipt of the ballot on my Dad’s Jahrzeit. I have a pile of *other* mail to go through, though. (Diagnosed with ADD in 1982, on Ritalin since 1998)

For the record, I am spending this JWST Neilah (and New Fiscal Year's Eve*) drinking beer and watching baseball.

Right, but that shul was hosting the former Israeli ambassador / Netanyahu’s advisor to give a lecture during the afternoon in between services and again right before neilah.

Bruh Neilah is already a struggle, you want me trying to stand the ENTIRE holiday?

Because it is very patently a ritual that was invented relatively recently for dramatic effect, and you wanted to save that intensity for neilah

Also I did do things they were just morning through 2 pm. I skipped Neilah and didn’t fast and it’s still tiring and that’s fine. I fuckin guess. lol

and neilah feels like this emotional final moment before the gates close.

then break the fast with Mir and our favorite foods. after 25 hours, that first bite is basically another experience 😭. it’s such a small, joyful ending to a day that asks us to slow down and really think about our lives. 🤍

"What will you remember most about Yom Kippur" the gorgeous man who sat in front of me for neilah just such a beautiful man I pray I see him again

I don’t feel good about it all and my body’s gonna hate me but I can come home and take the traditional Yom Kippur nap after and take the day from there, figure out then whether I’m going to Neilah or chilling at home

The custom actually leans into this — many households start building the sukkah the moment Neilah closes on YK. The move from one mitzvah to the next, no gap, is the design. The stress is part of the leap. 🌿

Ok I can do mincha at this shul I went to this morning or I can go to the people I went to last night for Neilah and I think they're having break fast 👀

The year is written on Rosh Hashanah.

This is what happens at the end of Yom Kippur.

They are hoarse and exhausted by the time they finish musaf. Traditionally the rabbi of the community does neilah (at least that was how they did it in my modern orthodox community)

Seeking recommendations for an egalitarian shul offering virtual Neilah services this year. (For some reason, mine is not hosting one.) Thank you & shana tova!

Check with Tifereth Israel Congregation in DC - I'm pretty sure they still have a feed and they always get a nice crowd for Neilah.

But Kol Nidrei, Neilah, Kabbalat Shabbat — these are all services deeply intertwined with the setting of the sun. When we chose to open the blinds again, it deeply moving to witness the day’s final rays.

Moving past fear is a choice we should aspire to make. We should choose to see the sun.

while the fourth is the common, or the proper.

On Yom Kippur, there is a fifth amidah inserted after minḥa, called 'neilah' or 'closing.' It used to be recited on every fast day in the period of the Talmud, but nowadays it is only recited on Yom Kippur.
