Looking at their anatomy, I quickly realized that millerettids shared more features with neodiapsid reptiles, particularly in their braincase and postcranial skeleton.

That question led Valentin Buffa @valentinbuffa.bsky.social and I to re-examine all non-saurian neodiapsid taxa.

And we found tympanic fossae in more places than expected…. Even Youngina!

Our postcranial observations, specifically on the foot, suggests that many features of the modern reptile hindlimb are actually present in their closest fossil relatives!

You heard it folks: milleretids are *also* postcranially very neodiapsid-like 😃

Milleretta also closes a lower temporal fenestra AND a ‘gap’ in the region of the Neodiapsid upper temporal fenestra through ontogeny. This latter feature is diagnostic for all millerettids.

I don’t think that this gap actually represents a UTF, but that Permian reptile skulls are a bit nuanced

The tree as presented in the text figure is reduced to exclude some of the Palaeozoic taxa within the analysis, specifically the younginid-like neodiapsid Orovenator. Those taxa drag divergence dates pretty deep into the Permian and maybe the Carboniferous, depending on where you put them

reading about permian ichnofossils because I found some suspicious scratches (fig. 2) on a piece of shale that I imagine represents some sort of newt (n) inspecting a centimeter piece of random crap (c) lying around. I'm probably wrong though, it's way too faint
appropriate banger paleoart (fig. 1)
