Autistic people are disproportionately mad, but the wider neurodiversity community is very sanist, and even when it is not, it only pays lip service to mad issues.
Autistic people are mostly not mad people & the autistic struggle is a much different struggle than the mad struggle, & autistic people often participate in bigotry against us, sanism, if they can be included in society's collective of the sane.

Four ways to include #ActuallyAutistic people with complex support needs:

1. Hold a fundamental belief in the value of inclusion
2. Implement structural support while working flexibly and differently
3. Build relationship as the foundation of participation

Honest to god a pet peeve of mine when it comes to neurodiversity discussions.

No one. NO ONE fully understands the complexities of mental disorders. Not even those of us who have said mental disorders. So acting like you do just makes you look like a moron.

My first awareness of neurodiversity came from seeing Data on TNG and how the whole crew of the Enterprise accepted and loved him. As a viciously bullied and rejected autistic child, it sparked visions of living otherwise.

Make continuous reflection and improvement as part of the process: Researchers should use feedback to strengthen inclusion.

Autism isn’t a dating app “type”.
In our new blog, Phoebe Morris explores how media stereotypes can romanticise autistic traits while overlooking autistic women’s lived experiences, needs and safety.

My body has changed over the last year but I managed to score a jacket that’s no longer made, exactly the same as my existing winter jacket, in the new size I need, BNWT. Absolute neurodiversity SCORE.

I did “neurodiversity in the workplace” training this week and spent the whole time thinking “doesn’t everyone know this already?”

And then I remembered.

Y’all haven’t spent enough time with colourful highlighters and printouts of the DSM.

"What was your biggest impact on the internet?"

I wish the answer were "Created the most popular webcomic ever," but so far it's probably "Published widely-referenced definitions of neurodiversity-related terms and concepts, and played a lead role in creating and popularizing the term neuroqueer."
"What was your biggest impact on the internet?"

One time I essentially wrote a research paper about Nurse Joy from Pokemon and a week later there were a bunch of buzzfeed style articles about Nurse Joy and all the Pokemon Wikis had beefed up their Nurse Joy pages with familiar information.
"What was your biggest impact on the internet?"

My George and the Dragon slash thread did some numbers on Tumblr, probably that.

#Autism is NOT a behaviour disorder

It’s a neurological difference

When an autistic person is overwhelmed, they aren’t “misbehaving”. Their nervous system is communicating a need for safety, sensory relief & real accommodation
