Well, I got my photo! NGC1980 (Orion and a little bit of The Running Man nebula, too). Just about in the shot is the horsehead nebula, but I will need to wait for darker skies for that. Happy new year everyone - have a wonderful 2026. So glad we can all share our hobbies here on Bluesky.

Sounds like Stellarium would be welcome on a few ppl’s phones!

Just point it at the sky and it tells you which stars, planets & constellations you’re looking at.

I took these quick phone-camera pics last night, and a Stellarium screenshot!

Fun facts in alt-text.
A long-exposure picture of the Moon, Jupiter, and the star Aldebaran taken freehand with an iPhone 13. The moon looks more like the Sun due to the amount of light captured in this nighttime image. A long-exposure picture of the constellation of Orion taken freehand with an iPhone 13. The sword of Orion is in fact a star cluster and an emission nebula, called NGC1980, which was discovered by William Hershel in 1786. In the centre of the constellation is Orion’s Belt, which appears to be 3 stars although only Alnilam in the centre is a star - with both Alnitak & Mintaka being star clusters. The reason Alnilam appears as bright as it neighbouring clusters is that it is a supergiant star, being the 29th brightest in the night sky visible from Earth. A screenshot from the astronomy app Stellarium, showing the Orion constellation, the Moon, Jupiter, and the red giant star, Aldebaran, which has a diameter of approximately 45-times that of the Sun.
