<sad face> about NICER, but exciting news with eXTP and NewAthena!

I suspect (with lots of confidence) we are going to start seeing more profile events with much more sensitive new instruments coming online (SKA, DSA, ngVLA), so fingers crossed at one point new X-ray instruments catch them too!

In lieu of the in-person VLA Open House (which was canceled due to road damage from flooding) the planned talks will be livestreamed with Q&A on NRAO’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page.

What’s new with the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA)? 📡

We’ve recently reached some milestones for “first fringes” – meaning successful correlation, combining signals from 2+ separate antennas.

And we're about to turn on much more powerful instruments:

SKA, ngVLA, Deep Synoptic Array which also compliment instruments like FAST and MeerKAT.

My prediction is we are about to see MANY more profile change events in the MSP population, and use these to probe magnetosphere physics.

Corder was also a panelist at the ngVLA Conceptual Design Review in September 2024.

Corder’s extensive experience and deep understanding of large-scale astronomical facilities will be significant assets as the ngVLA advances toward the next stage of development.

He has worked at the VLA; I mentioned that Robin had been there this past summer and we talked about what's next: the NGVLA. Then we moaned about science funding and went our separate ways.

Today's VLA (Very Large Array) has 27 dishes along a Y-shaped set of tracks, each arm 13 miles long.

The next-gen Array will have 263 dishes in core, spiral, and long-baseline arrangement, more than 5000 miles wide. It will be a powerful compound radio eye. 🔭🧪

The VLA is the most iconic radio observatory (Contact to Pluribus). Here's its successor: a next-gen prototype antenna just started scanning the radio sky.

If its funding survives (far from certain, sadly), the ngVLA will be 10x as sensitive and 10x as sharp. 🧪🔭
