🌸KYŌTO'S LAST CHERRY BLOSSOMS🌸

drowsy spring
begins with
Omuro’s flowers
ねぶたさの春は御室の花よりぞ
-Yosa Buson (与謝蕪村 1716-84).

Ninna-ji's (仁和寺) grove of cherry trees are some of the last to bloom in the city, bringing sakura season to a dramatic close.

18) MANEKI NEKO😸
An omikuji not particular to any one shrine or temple, 'Maneki-neko' (招き猫 'Beckoning Cat') is a popular Japanese symbol, ushering in good luck to the possessor.
Appearing in the late Edo period, it is unclear where Maneki-neko originated (Kyōto or Tōkyō).

🤍🌸NOT ALL PINK💚💛

Cherry blossoms are known for their delicate white and pink petals, but there are a handful of sakura trees that show off different colours at this time of year.

Ninna-ji (仁和寺) and Hirano-jinja (平野神社) are good places to see these unusual varieties.

Taikenmon'in rebuilt the temple (the name Hōkongō-in dates to this time) as an enclave of nearby Ninna-ji.
Like Ninna-ji, the position of abbot was held by a member of the imperial family. At the same time she employed a Ninna-ji monk, Rinken (林賢), to re-landscape the garden.

😡☹️MICHIZANE'S FALL👉🐂

Sugawara-no-Michizane (菅原道真) reached the height of his power in 899, appointed 'Minister of the Right' (右大臣), but storm clouds were gathering.
His patron, Emperor Uda, abdicated in favour of his young son, who was close to the rival Fujiwara clan.

You may be overwhelmed by all the whites and pinks, but it always pays to look more closely as there are lots of other colours on show right now.
Ninna-ji has a few varities of 'green' cherry blossoms. The temple is also famed for its purplish ’mitsuba-tsutsujii rhododendron (三葉躑躅).

1) A NINNA-JI ACOLYTE LOSES HIS EARS & NOSE (仁和寺の法師)👃👂

It was at the western foot of Narabigaoka (双ヶ丘) that essayist and poet Yoshida Kenko (吉田兼好 1283-1352) lived out his final years.
A mound in the nearby grounds of Chosen-ji (長泉寺) may be his final resting place.

This poem seems rather apt. Just a few years ago the grounds would have been a checkerboard of picnic blankets, with drunken revelers napping on benches and children playing.

16) Ninna-ji (仁和寺)📏💚

Known as 'Omuro-zakura' (御室桜), Ninna-ji's cherry trees are uniquely stunted, growing to only around 2m tall. They are a variant of 'sato-zakura' (郷さくら).
The temple precincts are also a great place to catch green varieties of cherry blossoms.

As the night wears on the party becomes outrageously inebriated.
Drunkenly the acolyte takes up a three-legged iron pot, places it on his head and performs a dance. When he later tries to remove it, he discovers the pot is quite stuck😓

It is thought that Omuro-zakura (御室桜) originated in Heian times.
The current cherry trees were planted in the early Edo period (江戸時代), shortly after Tokugawa Iemitsu (徳川家光 1604-51) helped rebuild the temple.

Ninna-ji features in Yoshida Kenkō's (吉田兼好) famous "Essays in Idleness" (徒然草 "Tsurezuregusa").
Episode 53, the 'true' story "The Priest of Ninna-ji" (仁和寺にある法師), describes a raucous feast held by the temple for a young acolyte about to take religious orders.

The other monks first try to break the pot open.
It remains stuck fast.
An attempt to cut it off only manages to scratch the acolyte, and so they rush him to a physician in the city. After examining the boy, the doctor concludes nothing can really be done!

Right beside Ninna-ji is the (often overlooked) temple of Renge-ji (蓮華寺), a site that traces it origins to Kūkai, who enshrined a stone image of Fudō Myōō (不動明王) in 806 within a grotto on the north west bank of Hirosawa Pond (広沢池).

49) MANEKI-TIGER😼
For the 'Year of the Tiger' Ninna-ji (仁和寺) gave their popular 'Maneki-neko' (招き猫 'Beckoning Cat') a make-over.
Appearing in the late Edo period, it is unclear where Maneki-neko originated (Kyōto or Tōkyō).

Ninna-ji was founded by Emperor Uda in 888.

Let's start at the road's southern end.

Ninna-ji (仁和寺) was founded in 888 by Emperor Uda (宇多天皇), and for most of its life head priests were drawn from the imperial family.
The temple is famed for its groves of uniquely stunted 'omuro-zakura' (御室桜) cherry trees.

Fukō-sha (夫荒社), in the grounds of Fukuōji-jinja (福王子神社), is dedicated to the spirit of a laborer who died nearby whilst transporting the annual tribute of ice from Tanba Province (丹波国) to the imperial court (an exhausting race in grueling heat).
