"谷汲山" Mt. Tanigumi-san, Gifu prefecture.
Tanigumi-san is the mountain name of the Buddhist temple Kegon-ji. Japanese common people often refer to temples by the name of the mountain.
Length 63cm (24.8in). Circa 1970s or 1980s, #vintage .
1, Pennant of the temple Kegon-ji on Mt. Tanigumi-san. It is a black cloth with an illustration printed on it and decorated with yellow fringe. 2, The illustration is a view of the Kegon-ji temple grounds. 3, Enlarged image of the illustration. The main hall (1879) can be seen at the top of a long stone staircase surrounded by forest. The Niomon Gate (mid-18th century) is also depicted. The captions are the main hall and Niomon Gate. Other captions are "Mt. Tanigumi-san Kegon-ji Temple" (white) in kanji, and "Gifu Pref." (yellow) in English. 4, The title is in Japanese. Mt. Tanigumi-san (yellow) in kanji. The subtitle is "Prefectural Park" (yellow). The mountainous area in western Gifu Prefecture is depicted on the right side of the flag.

Saijo Inari Temple in Okayama City is an old temple founded in the mid-8th century. It is a rare temple that is both a temple and a shrine.
Length 65.5cm (25.7in). Circa 1970s or 1980s, #vintage .
1, The pennant of the Saijo Inari Temple. It is a yellow cloth with an illustration printed on it and two orange strings attached to the left of the flag. 2, The illustration shows the precincts of the temple with the Niomon Gate in the center. The stone Niomon Gate, built in the style of an Indian temple, is depicted in the center of the illustration. The old main hall (1741) and the torii gate are also depicted. 3, The title is both Japanese and English. In kanji, it reads "Saijo Inari" (red gold powder). The subtitle is "OKAYAMA, TAKAMATSU" (black) in romaji. 4, A white fox, a messenger of God, is depicted on the right side of the flag.

Climbing the 117 stone steps leads to the Kannon Hall of Hosen-ji Temple. Said to be built in the mid-Edo period, it has a unique layout: both front sides extend forward to house Nio statues, acting as both a Kannon hall and a Niomon gate.

Jōjakkō-ji's oldest structure actually belonged originally to another temple.
Built in the 14thC, the thatched Niō-mon (仁王門) guarded the south entrance to Honkoku-ji (本圀寺), one of Kyōto's most important Nichiren centres, but in 1616 Nisshin moved it to his new temple.

A (very) early walk to finally revisit one of my favorite places in the world.
A narrow alleyway in Gion near sunrise, the alley entirely in shadow as the sun starts to light the mountain visible at the end of the alley. Power lines criss-cross the sky. Poster and husband pose for a selfie in front of the Niomon Gate at Kiyomizudera. The gate is a large structure notable for its pagoda roof and bright red underside, serving as one of the main landmarks of the temple. There are a lot of stairs and, notably (if you know the overtourism problem), not a lot of people, because it is six AM in the damn morning. A narrow cobblestone street (Ninnenzaka) near Kiyomizudera. People are starting to gather and move down the street, as well as a jinrikisha (rickshaw). The traditional machiya houses that line the street are all different heights as the street rises ahead, and the effect is that you can see multiple levels of depth as the traditional Japanese rooftops overlap. Technically this is Kodai-ji and not Kiyomizudera but down here in the alt text we’ll keep that between us. The photo is looking up at the tree canopy in a bamboo grove, a narrow band of sky visible.
