#noepe
It's been raining on Noepe since Friday afternoon; the 9" glass vase on the table on our deck overflowed overnight & there's another 30 hours of rain in the forecast. Through the blurry skylight above the desk in my attic office I see trees swaying in the wind. And, as always, I'm back in Fanaye.
When the heavens opened over Fanaye. A rain song meditation.
Moments lost in time, like tears in rain.

Where I live, on the island of Noepe AKA Martha's Vineyard south of Cape Cod Massachusetts — as on the Cape itself — tackle football is an endangered species. Some years there aren't enough kids to field a team. Other sports are more popular.

"This 4th of July is yours, not mine."
Frederick Douglass spoke on the island of Noepe in the towns now commonly known as Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. On this July 4th day in 2026, we reflect on words from Frederick Douglass. Listen 🎧

The struggle and survival of our indigenous population
Nôepe, this Island where we live or visit, has been part of the U.S. for 250 years, but it has been a Wôpanâak homeland since time immemorial. On June 23, Vineyard Haven library hosted Brad Lopes, an ...

My 3 children (youngest of whom is now 38) are all Tisbury Tigers: graduates of Tisbury (elementary) school. Which means that that all completed the (7th grade? 8th?) requirement to collect leaves from 30 different species of Noepe trees. "It's impossible!" the kids all say. "There's only oaks!"/2

On the island of Noepe, also known as Martha's Vineyard, oak trees predominate. These trees bud & bring forth leaves ~ 1 month later than other on-island trees. And they produce one absolute fucktonne of pollen before they grace us with their leaves, which announce summer. May is oak pollen hell. 1/

Things You Might Not Know About Martha’s Vineyard

I live on the island of Noepe (AKA Martha's Vineyard), so naturally we have an outdoor shower. From late March through mid November it's all I use. There's a nail on the wall where I hang my bottle-opener.

Colonialism had erased uncountable native cultures, but nowhere was it more egregious than taking Noepe from the Wampanoag people and calling it Martha's Vineyard.
No wonder all the succeeding ghouls wanted to own islands and be unaccountable on them.
i think it is particularly interesting that Barro, McArdle, and Douthat saw the moralizing change which has happened since the 1970s not as "you might get arrested for fucking a 12-year-old" but rather "your friends on Martha's Vineyard might cut you off for fucking her."
i would say that it's class solidarity but at this point i think it's just a tic. they don't even really process anything anymore
