I was just informed that NoMachine is no longer free.
It's remote desktop software that works on any OS and for the longest time it was the simplest option for home users to run headless servers regardless of configuration.
Now they're suddenly charging for it. They also deleted their forums.

We run ours headless; I'm running Mint with GNOME, which lets you use Windows Remote Desktop to control it.
If you want to do simpler, just use NoMachine. It's free.

I've had to make due with NoMachine, which works but compared to RDP is just absolute garbo.
The screen constantly smears, there's lag, it's a terrible headless experience.
If anyone knows of RDP software for Linux that actually goddamn works I'd love to hear it.

Alright, I've managed to find an RDP solution that doesn't have RustDesk's horrible audio delay through NoMachine. Couple other technical things I wanna polish during my freetime to make the edit a bit smoother for episode 4. E3's edit was genuinely a fucking *nightmare* technically

I have effectively given the fuck up on getting xrdp to work with Mint XFCE OR Mint Cinnamon, because following every single "solution" for "session shows black screen and immediately closes" wasted the better part of 12 hours.
So I'm resorting to the blurry garbage that is Nomachine.

I used that thing headless for *years* as a Windows install without a single issue using Microsoft RDP. But with Linux I can't get xrdp or x2go to work to save my goddamn life so I'm having to use NoMachine, which is just painful.

Moonlight and Sunshine for remoting into my Ubuntu workstation has been fantastic. It's much better than the other options I've tried (RDP, VNC, Splashtop, NoMachine).

just my personal experience working from home: if the PC is running windows, parsec. if the pc is running linux, nomachine. not saying these are the best but they both worked fantastically for me over LAN / wifi.
