In high school, I'm struggling with a citation thing. Teaching about why to use a generator like zotero or noodletools is easy - metadata and maling sure inputs are accurate. But how to explain why *not* to use an LLM to generate a citation *without* using anthropomorphizing language?

I don't know about OP's library catalogue, so I can't speak to the accuracy there. I direct my high schoolers to zotero or noodletools. Those that use online generators (which are LLMs now) or a chatbot often have to do substantial corrections, way more so than those who used metadata programs.

Yep. My middle school kids had to do research papers with a digital bibliography that linked directly to the sources they consulted (or photos of those sources for hard copies) as well as digital note cards with their rough notes from each source. (We used NoodleTools.)

Lmao one of the main reasons I recommend zotero only to high school seniors and juniors. For underclassmen we stick with noodletools, and even then a lot of my upperclassmen prefer that over zotero. (Both do slightly different things but overlap in terms of citation generation.)
Anyway come to my workshops, you’ll hear me try to explain metadata to 19 year olds who have never ripped a CD to their computer.

The only reason I encourage zotero for upperclassmen is because I want them to get used to it before going to college. Higher ed doesn't generally offer noodletools. We're a college prep school, so I gotta prep them for college research.

Much of my work with my own faculty lately has been to help them reimagine assignments that dig into the process and prioritize grades there. So I'm spending more of my budget on tools and resources to support that, such as libguides, databases, and noodletools.

6th grade science starting their first lesson in NoodleTools. Discussing how to find an article of interest to them and how to cite it properly. No plagiarism here! #morethanbooks #middleschoollibrary #citationtools #noodletools #librarylessons #citeyoursources @apslibrarians.bsky.social

Skip the copying and pasting! 📄

From any JSTOR Workspace folder, you can now tap "cite" to export every item’s citation in one go. Citation options include EasyBib, NoodleTools, and more.

Try it during your next #research session. Read the support article to learn how: https://bit.ly/4nUsmKZ

I usually only have a couple minutes to talk about citation generation, at the end of a 15-20 talk on research. I want to get them on noodletools or zotero and to not use easybib or an LLM. But I need to explain why no LLM quickly and simply with no anthropomorphizing.

Another Zotero question. With NoodleTools, my students can share their projects with a teacher so the teacher can review their sources and leave comments or answer questions, or work with a partner. Is there a similar function on Zotero? Group collections don't seem to fit what my students need.

Another student made an @animoto with a QR code in it that goes to her @noodletools work cited! Technology mashup at its best!!

Lol as a historian, I loathe MLA and love Chicago. But your point about each having their usefulness in different specialties holds. I'm at a high school where the kids use all 3 - MLA in English, Chicago in history, and APA in science. Wirh NoodleTools or Zotero to generate citations.

I had a similar situation. Of the student had just used NoodleTools like I told them, it would've been an easy bib to generate. Instead they spent an hour fixing all of the LLMs incorrect citations. Not a single citation was even remotely correct. Every one had something wrong.

I wish I could get high schoolers to do that. They love the auto import feature in zotero and noodletools too much!

A2: It's not a new tool, but I can't imagine not using NoodleTools with students. It's a great resource for helping students organize research projects from start to finish. They are always updating it, too! #EduSkyChat
Q2: What NEW edtech tool have you found you can't live without?

What makes it so awesome?

Zotero and noodletools just pull from whatever metadata may or may not be embedded in the doc. Students still have to check them. Accuracy and not having to add/fix is why they want to use an LLM. They want easy over friction. I need to explain why that won't work.

Well, zotero and noodletools aren't exactly know for accuracy either. They just pull from whatever metadata may or may not be embedded in the doc. Students still have to check them. Accuracy and not having to add/fix is why they want to use an LLM. I need to explain why that won't work.

I do that elsewhere. This is specifically on why I'm recommending thrm to use noodletools or zotero rather than a generator. I get like 5min in the classroom on this.

Introduced databases & noodletools to 6th graders. Love how my 6th graders are easily picking up how to use high school level databases.
