FAO, NPPO host workshop to shield grape farms from fruit fly threat
Staff Reporter THE National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are stepping up efforts to train horticultural farmers, particularly those in Namibia’s table grape industry, on managing fruit flies, one of the most invasive and destructive agricultural pests. “Fruit flies particularly invasive and highly destructive species such as the Oriental Fruit Fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) continue to pose serious challenges to agricultural productivity and trade across the SADC region. In particular, and among others, the pest poses a significant threat to our Namibian table grape industry along the Orange River (justifying why we have this workshop here in Aussenkehr). We cannot overemphasize the importance of the Namibian table grape industry, which is a crucial agricultural sector, driving economic growth in the southern //Kharas Region,” James Nzehengwa, the Deputy Director, Directorate of Agricultural Production within the Agriculture Ministry, explained. --- --- --- Nzehengwa made the remarks at the recent Capacity Building Workshop on Fruit Fly Management and Market Access held in Aussenkehr, //Kharas Region, and hosted by the FAO in collaboration with the NPPO. “The overall objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the capacity of the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Namibia and value chain actors to manage fruit fly risks and apply internationally agreed phytosanitary and market access requirements, thereby improving horticultural export competitiveness and facilitating sustainable access to regional and international markets,” Nzehengwa said. He noted that the workshop is particularly important given the table grape industry’s significant contribution to foreign exchange earnings and its creation of permanent and seasonal employment, especially during peak harvest periods. The impact of fruit flies, he emphasised, is therefore far-reaching. “The impact of this pest extends beyond the field, affecting compliance costs, increase surveillance and control burdens, presenting a significant phytosanitary barrier that limit access to lucrative markets. Therefore, for Namibia, effective management of these risks is not only a plant health priority, but also a strategic trade and economic imperative,” Nzehengwa said. During the workshop, NPPO staff, ministry officials, farmers and exporters received practical training in fruit fly management. The programme aims to strengthen national compliance with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) and enhance horticultural export competitiveness. As part of these efforts, export-oriented horticultural farms are being profiled through the collection of GPS coordinates and production data. This is intended to improve fruit fly surveillance, traceability and risk analysis, enabling timely detection and response.

Strengthening NPPO Staff Training in Belize through the IPPC Plant Health Campus
Course: IPPC PLANT HEALTH CAMPUS | FAO elearning Academy (https://elearning.fao.org/course/view.php?id=1255) Francisco Gutierrez, Technical Director for Plant Health Services at the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, shares his experience with the development of guides and training materials under the auspices of the FAO eLearning Academy. He emphasizes the importance of these resources for NPPOs, especially given the challenge of onboarding staff who often lack prior training — from junior to senior levels. Having contributed to the development of such materials, he highlights how the FAO eLearning Academy and IPPC products offer a structured and strategic approach to capacity development. These tools allow new staff to gain essential skills in a shorter time and provide a clear understanding of the full range of NPPO activities. “This is a systematic way to build capacity quickly and effectively.” © FAO: http://www.fao.org Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=FAOoftheUN Follow FAO on social media! * Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO * Instagram - https://instagram.com/fao * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/fao * TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@fao * Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/fao/ * Weibo - https://www.weibo.com/unfao © FAO: http://www.fao.org #SDGs #Agenda2030 #GlobalGoals
