this wasn't just pro forma!!!! If you had a job and you were recruited into Opus Dei, whether as a priest or a layperson (called a numerary), you were expected to donate your salary.

If I hadn't spent a lot of time in various numerary residences, this would sound really exaggerated but it's really, really not. They actually do live like this.

I interned at one of their organizations in college. Had a feeling i was being sized up in odd ways. one time i was invited to dinner at the numerary residence, and i remember feeling very judged because i took a second piece of sheet cake at dessert.

Yeah, that's true, forgot about those.
I have a friend who's a numerary, or at least was for years; i haven't talked to her in awhile. And like, she's mostly normal? Conservative, but normal. I'm pretty sure she basically just wanted to be a nun but still have a real job, tbh.

Yes I spent time in the 90s in several numerary residences in Canada and saw stuff first-hand. No wonder they are so secretive because normal people can scarcely believe what goes on.
