What would New Zealand be without kiwi? Without Fiordland rainforest, or the haunting call of kōkako? If we run down our ecosystems, and thin out the ocean, is the weight of that loss not greater than the commodity value of the timber or tonnage of fish?
Measuring impact: Here’s the difference NZGeo makes

Do I know anyone going to World Press Photo in May? Looks like there will be at least one person from NZGeo attending, maybe two! We'd love to meet other cool folks/publishers/people trying to keep photojournalism alive.

"When the government dropped the EV subsidy this year, we had a sudden run of advertising for utes and large SUVs, which we found difficult to square with our journalism."

Support NZGeo if you can, fam.

“Approximately 5600 Iranians call New Zealand home, with the majority, roughly 4000, living in Auckland. The past six months of violence and struggle in Iran have shattered what was already a complicated diaspora.”

Okay Aotearoa, off out into the garden and let’s find a left-spiralling snail. www.nzgeo.com/stories/lets.... #nzgeo
Let's find a mate for Ned
One in 40,000 snails have the spiral on the left side of the shell, and they can only mate with other lefties. Can you help Ned find true love?

I thought the NZGeo article was balanced. In their own way a lot of our pest animals (rats and possums esp.) are cute. Well adapted to their environment, just not always in the right place. Might be fanciful to imagine we could preserve suburban ones without them reinvading wild spaces though.

Done. One print+digital sub for a year, which will bring me mailbox joy every couple of months as well as letting me view the archives.

I'm also going to subscribe to Wilderness (was already planning that before NZGeo). It must be 20 years since I last had any magazine subscriptions. Exciting!

Excellent article summarising the state of weather & hazard forecasting in NZ. A perverse situation. Thanks NZGeo.

Great article from NZGEO around the Youth Search And Rescue (YSAR) programme. As a former MRT/LANDSAR (ACR) volunteer I applaud this amazing initiative to get younger people involved. Read the article here: https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/how-to-save-a-life/

Oh I was right:"Unlike other magazines that skew older, whiter and more urban, NZGeo aligns with national averages for ethnicity, location, gender and age—except we have more in the school-leaver age group of 15–17 years old, and more Māori and Pasifika read NZGeo than any other magazine, by miles."

The latest @nzgeo had some great articles on NZ fisheries, including this amazing piece of orange roughy earbones that have been dated to over 200 years old.

This is the way. I shot the Ngutukaka story for NZGeo and I felt the plant was familiar as I’d battled Scottish broom for years. Both their strategy is to drop as many seeds into the soil and then be overgrown by forest. But any soil disturbance or slip etc and it’s back many many years later
