A ★★★★ review of Father Mother Sister Brother (2025)
NZIFF 2026 #3 My partner and I are generally in agreement about most films we see, but it's fair to say we have very different tolerances. There are certain subjects she has no interest in or time for...

It will go into our arthouse/indie cinemas in New Zealand thankfully but we had similar in that it was part of NZIFF in July/Aug and we have to wait for general release in November too.

Did any of you see the doco "Last Man Standing" at the NZIFF? I didn't vote for Anderton during his time in politics, but in hindsight he's been proven right in certain aspects.

Pretty cool that Jim Jarmusch's latest is on Netflix right when it's still screening at NZIFF

🎥 Film PSA (NZ):
If you don't get a chance to see it in cinema (you can still see it Friday 04 Sep @ various NZIFF locations plus in ltd other cinemas), catch, or rewatch Jim Jarmusch's familial triptych FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER on Netflix www.netflix.com/title/82064544

I finally got around to writing about some of the 27 films I saw at #NZIFF 2026 - mostly the queer ones, plus a few others that resonated. aquila1nz.dreamwidth.org/44109.html

Oh, the movie is pretty good. But the soundtrack was better. NZIFF 1991.

#nziff number 8 from New Zealand, a silent film about the horrors of being a renter

NZIFF encore

Mockbuster - Australian documentary made by a novice filmmaker about his experience directing a film for the infamous studio The Asylum. Pleasant enough look at an irregular film shoot but very much both Anthony and The Asylum selling themselves with a very clear kayfabe. 3/5

The only thing we managed to see at NZIFF was The Blood Countess, but that was everything I want out of a film festival - visually gorgeous, and so utterly bonkers we can only assume everyone involved in it was very very high.

REVIEW: The Samurai and the Prisoner is a contemplative, compelling, engaging, and incredibly written and directed historical mystery. One of the year’s best films. #nziff the-cinema-critic.com/2026/08/23/t...

After the delicious Raw and #nziff fave Titane I actually enjoyed Julia Ducournau heading to a more dramatic palette with #Alpha but feel this story’s all consuming morbidity overshadows the excellent idea (the individual body horror becoming a societal horror of bodies).

NZIFF film 17

Jim Queen - French animated movie about a gay influencer under threat from a virus turning him straight. Outrageous and funny with some great songs. 4/5

Amusing enough, and visually pops off the screen like a better work of, well, pop art than Olivia Wilde would conjour up, #IWantYourSex is a very accessible Araki. Oddly unsexy, and without the bite of the iconic apocalypse films, or the devastation of Mysterious Skin (also in this years #nziff)

NZIFF film 20

The Blood Countess - German comedy about a vampire version of Elizabeth Bathory in 1970s Vienna. A very quirky, absurdist satire that I found very frustrating because in theory I should have loved it but I just couldn't get on its wavelength, maybe because I was too tired. 3/5
August 22, 2026 at 10:53 AM
NZIFF film 18

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass - Wizard of Oz reimagined as a gentle Meta-satire of Hollywood. About two thirds of the jokes land but a couple are drawn out duds. 3.5/5

NZIFF film 16

The Good Boy (aka Heel) - British drama about a troubled teen abducted by a strange family. Middling psychological thriller let down by thin characterizations and a conservative ideology (that I'm pretty strongly opposed to) at it's core. 2/5
