I go the other way on this. Given the significant amount of information out there about the nztu, including hagers book and my research team’s work, teachers will have a lot of stuff to put in front of students which does not promote the organisation.
Just saw this on LinkedIn - I'm completely floored 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Yep. They style themselves Taxpayers Union so no reason to give them any abbreviation other than TU or NZTU and I can’t be bothered typing that when they don’t represent NZ

This is a pretty good summation of the most damning claim in Hager's book - racism worked well for the NZTU: simonwilsonhopetown.substack.com/p/dirty-work...
Dirty work and the disinfecting sunshine it deserves
Nicky Hager’s new book ‘Dirty Work’ reminds us how much we’ve lost in the last three years

I can't bash Jordan Williams but I can hit his financier. Just left a 1* review on British American Tobacco website based in Auckland pointing at Hager's book and pointing at NZTU. Maybe if enough of us leave a line in the reviews, NZTU might be dropped. Interfere with our democracy; we fight back.

Greens & Labour both out of the NZTU debates. My default view of this is "don't avoid hostile venues, use them to go to war" but it's a matter of coordination

If one oppn party pulls out unilaterally, they are isolated. But if both oppn parties pull out, the govt is isolated in a circle jerk

I wonder if the nztu is able to make their denials because it was a personal rather than corporate settlement. So the organisation has never settled a claim, he settled it privately.

We worked with the lead researcher to help her deal with some of these threats. It's shocking behaviour by the NZTU and the Minister to target them like that.

Ironically hager talks about the victimhood strategy that groups like the NZTU and FSU use, in the book!

Like Nicky, as someone who has spent a lot of time looking at the NZTU and FSU, I don't buy conspiracy theories about the Atlas Network. Yes it's a player, but we tend to blame it for our local right-wing problems. But these groups tend to be driven by domestic actors who then join Atlas.

and end funding for alternative understandings of science which do not originate in Western knowledge systems and lead to neoliberal market outcomes. For example, the NZTU argued that “few would resent paying taxes for genuine scientific research”.

We wrote about their role in this in our report on the NZTU: osf.io/2cvry/files/...
"The language used to highlight these research projects and the Marsden funding system encouraged taxpayer
citizens to be outraged at what and who their taxes are being paid out to,

investigating policing climate justice activism and large roadside sculptures as projects that were “not going to be coming out of my science budget”. The second of these research projects had been critiqued by the NZTU four months earlier."

In part that's because the book details much that we already know. Take the chapter on the NZTU's relationship with big tobacco. We know that the NZTU receives money from tobacco companies. We know the NZTU campaigns against regulation of smoking, including tobacco taxes and restrictions on vapes.
September 22, 2026 at 10:23 AM
We also know that the NZTU was behind an astroturf campaign to stop NZ's world-leading smokefree legislation 'Save Kiwi Dairies' which used stock images and a fake Dairy owner to front it. And we know that NZTU staffer Connor Molloy travelled to Panama in 2024 to attend an anti-regulation conference

Some of the details of how the relationship between the NZTU and BAT are new. But there's no leak of who funds the NZTU. There's no conclusive evidence of the NZTU's influence over the National and ACT parties. That's probably not Hager's failing, those smoking guns probably aren't there.
September 22, 2026 at 10:23 AM
Yes absolutely! I'm very much buried in the weeds of the NZTU because it was my job for 7 months to do so. But this book is a very accessible way to get most of that understanding without having to apply for a research grant and spend all your time poring over NZTU materials!
September 22, 2026 at 10:20 PM
These often come from 'hacked' messages, leaked emails, secrets being told. Dirty Work doesn't have this smoking gun. It won't bring down the NZTU or bring it into serious trouble. The book does add some things to what we know about the NZTU.
September 22, 2026 at 10:23 AM
In short, yes the NZTU takes tobacco money and does a bunch of pro-Tobacco lobbying. At one level that's messed up, but it's messed up that we already knew about.

Just home from Hager's launch of 'Dirty Work: The Taxpayers' Union and New Zealand's Hard Right'. We did some work on the NZTU which may be of interest to people who want to understand some more about NZTU strategies. Report: tinyurl.com/WhoCountsANZ. 5 videos: www.youtube.com/@WhoCounts

Yes absolutely. And unless the NZTU can rip it apart successfully over the coming days, it's a valuable introduction and reasonably in-depth analysis of this organisation which increases the evidence against it.

Some thoughts on Nicky Hager's "Dirty Work: The Taxpayers' Union and New Zealand's Hard Right" which was launched tonight. These thoughts are informed by a research project we did earlier this year looking at NZTU discourses which involved analysing two years of its media releases and other outputs.

Former staff spoke about Williams (who's represented as inherently misogynist but only racist if it raises him money) in ways that are revealing. There's some information about the relationships between the NZTU, the Campaign Company, Hobson's Pledge, and the Sensible Sentencing Trust that feel new.
