On the 30th anniversary of Raekwon’s OB4CL, I pulled from the archives and re-upped my full talk with the chef where he revisited his masterwork and broke everything down track-by-track.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx or The Infamous?

OB4CL
I always maintain that the template from the classic Rap album changed after Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic” but the new standard was established by “Illmatic” then “Ready To Die” then “The Infamous” then “OB4CL” then “Liquid Swords” to “The Score” which all culminated in “Reasonable Doubt”
Unfortunately I have written about Jay-Z. On reasonable doubt and the 21st century rap world hov has wrought… for better and worse

How Jay-Z Changed Rap With 'Reasonable Doubt' | Defector
If you went back in time to New York in the early ’90s, not a soul would believe you if you told them Jay-Z would end up where he is today. Well, maybe one person would: Jay himself. Jay-Z’s relativel...

Phil Collins & Philip Bailey “Easy Lover”, Illmatic and OB4CL
Can you pinpoint a moment in your life where your love for music, either a genre or music in general, went up a level?
Tryna see something. Like was it a specific song or video or whatever?

I’m going with: “Liquid Swords”, “Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version”, “OB4CL”, “Grandmasters” & “Iron Man” myself—even with the terrible mixing & mastering job. I’d put “OB4CL2”, “Fishscale”, “Tical” & “No Said Date” after it
I’d put at least Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Iron Man, and Return to the 36 Chambers before Supreme Clientele.

Don't do much submitting of samples but I did submit the strings on "Knowledge God" (on OB4CL) to that whosampled site. Think they must have been used in some film or TV programme as I don't think RZA was the type to be scouring random easy listening LPs (unlike say The Beatnuts)

This is what’s nuts… He was locked up at the time, opening up space for Killa Priest and Masta Killa. Once he got out, he was introduced as Cappuchino on “OB4CL”
Is Cappadonna supposed to be a full fledged member? He said he was locked up when they recorded 36 Chambers, but was part of the group prior to that.

its pretty interesting how Method Man is by and large the standout Wu Tang member, like even ppl who don't know what that group is at least knows who he is, yet all his solo work can be summed up at Okay At Best. or at least its clearly not held as high regard as OB4CL or anything by Ghostface
