#SYNCHRONY and #AntarcticaInSync are bringing together teams operating long-term ocean moorings around Antarctica
Workshop: "Towards a synchronized Antarctic circumpolar moored ocean observatory"
The online workshop will look across observatories — from the deep Southern Ocean to continental shelves and beneath ice shelves — and share technical, logistical and scientific experience.

We have dark sky laws in Tucson because of the number of observatories we have here. It really does make a difference.

A nice primer on laser use at large observatories.

No, astronomers haven't been shooting down UAPs.

Or have they? 🤔

Why astronomers make fake stars with huge lasers
For the first time in its history, the Very Large Telescope in Chile is operating with up to seven lasers that fire up into the atmosphere. But why do astronomers need them?

And a number of seismic observatories.
The Jesuits were responsible for the first regularly published earthquake catalog and the namesake of the widely used Mercalli intensity scale was also a Catholic priest (although I’m not sure if he was actually a Jesuit).

In case you missed it at the Con - a processed collection of images we took in front of an audience (sometimes based on requests) at this year's Live Astronomy in Space Track. The remotely-operated telescopes are at observatories in Chile and the Canary Islands. Check us out in 2027! #dragoncon

On Tuesday, our Museum Project group visited @hsmoxford.bsky.social to find out more about the role of observatories, and to explore some of the astronomical equipment which belonged to the Radcliffe Observatory! The visit forms part of a year long project supported by @royalsociety.org.

We’ve been looking for life beyond earth since the first telescope. Since then, we’ve built entire observatories and even sent instruments into space looking for signals (and sending them ourselves).

Recently, we got a radio signal.

Request for Input on Future Ocean Observing Priorities
Dear Colleagues, On June 18, 2026, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced its intent to continue operations and maintenance of the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) and to issue this Dear Colleague Letter soliciting perspectives on what ocean observation capabilities NSF should provide.

I clearly remember that just 20 years ago, technology capable of delivering these kinds of results would have cost a fortune and been available only to professional observatories.

Clear skies, everyone!

Through its connected network of sensors, coastal radars, hydrophones, and data platforms, ONC observatories provide critical data and insights that help advance a safer, more resilient, and sustainable ocean.

I think the next example is that Flagstaff is a dark sky city. What originally started as a drive to help the local observatories quickly turned into a quality of life thing that locals will defend vehemently. How many places are there where you can stand in the middle of downtown and see stars?

the range and spectrum of pokopia builds is so funny. i love seeing the people who build extraordinary sweeping lunar castles and gothic estates and realistically impossible observatories and also the people who are like "i built a uniqlo store :)"
