Sibelius's tone poem portrays mythological nymphs in the sea. From a recent concert in Finland.

#NowSpinning One of my favourite works ever, Sibelius’s gorgeous Oceanides. I still find the spell this work casts totally irresistible even after hearing probably hundreds of times. But I don’t know this version very well.

Dancing Dawn

The Oceanides sculpture, dubbed the ‘Sea Nymphs’ by locals, is located on the edge of Fairy Bower pool in Manly.

#NowSpinning something really special. Beecham’s Sibelius always has a special atmosphere and this famous version of the glorious Oceanides is no exception. The mysterious half lights and bardic otherworldliness are magnifciently affecting.

This is another stunning set of Sibelius performances from Järvi. The real highlights, though, are my personal favourite versions of the Oceanides and Luonnotar. Isokoski is a stunning storyteller here, but the power and atmosphere Järvi draws from his orchestra is awesome.

And my favourite Sibelius work, the great tone poem, The Oceanides. The very opening is so completely captivating that no-one could doubt the glories that will follow. The glinting, dancing lights and glowing power together bring a work of enormous impact.

I should say that my desert island Sibelius would be the Oceanides and Symphony No.4.

29. Los oceanides están un poco inspirados en el aspecto anfibio de la gente marina de Luca.

Pero creo que fui un poco cobarde y debería haberlos hecho más bichos para que Poseidón fuera a full monsterfucker 😂😂😂

My personal favourite Sibelius Tone poem is the majestic Oceanides. Once again Järvi has to feature here, with a stunningly surging and heaving recording on DG; Beecham lets us hear fabulous - if raw - detail at the big climax; Vänskä brings limpid beauty to the opening measures.
