You should do it. What? No, I definitely shouldn’t. The world would be better if you did. Says who?! I’m not doing that. Maybe not now. But you will. What makes you so sure? The way you pause when you’re all alone with a knife. That’s… Morbid curiosity? Hesitation? Contemplation? No. You’re wrong. You’re just an intrusive thought. Are intrusive thoughts usually so… lingering? Sure, they can be. But I would never act on you. You’re not real. And what makes you so sure that you are? Excuse me? Your little midnight visits with a knife aren’t the only time you get like that. Get like what, exactly? Like you aren’t yourself. Because you aren’t even sure that you are. That doesn’t make any sense. And that’s what scares you so much about it. Right. Who else would I even be? Oh, don’t be so coy. You know what I mean. I don’t think that I do. You don’t know if you’re a brain piloting a flesh suit or something else entirely. Shit, don’t phrase it like that. Makes me feel weird. You call it weird now. But you know the real word for it is hollow. No, I don’t, because I don’t think about it that hard. You try not to. You’ve had moments outside yourself since you were a child. That’s different. I used to think aliens were controlling me like a Sim. Is it different? Or is it just harder to explain now? It’s different. Why are you still here? I’m done with you. You know why I’m still here. Because you know how to find out. Oh, that’s rich. Find out what? You’re about to find out who you really are. And just how do you propose I’ll do that? With the knife.

Day Twelve - Bat

This is a follow-up piece to "Day Two - Witch", so I recommend reading that one first.

High Priestess. What a stupid title, Lenora thought. They only called her that because it seemed to fit, but in reality it fit no better than this oversized hat on her head. Then again, if Lenora was worried about fitting in, she wouldn’t be here right now. Why did she even join a coven? Peer pressure? Heca had floated the idea over brunch, like it was the simplest thing in the world. Heca’s dead now, so it goes to show what a great idea it was. All a moot point now, since Lenora was about to join her. A coven losing two High Priestesses in less than two years: not a great look! Lenora stared into the cave she found herself in, searching for anything: and finding it. On the roof, nestled among stalactites, hiding as well as a pigeon in New York City, was a bat. Lenora took a deep breath, precise and calculating, and whispered the words once more: AD LIBERTATEM VOLA. The bat awoke from its slumber and flew to Lenora and perched on her finger, swinging to face her in the same upside-down position it had on the rocks. She studied the bat’s face like she would a child’s; She must’ve realized this fact, because it made her hesitate. Hesitation was a foreign concept to Lenora, having dug it out and discarded it long ago, or so she thought. The bat looked fragile and helpless. Its tiny feet wrapped around her finger like a ring. Its eyes were like glass, refracting something arcane and infinite. The last time Lenora had seen such possibility in a set of eyes was Asha. Lenora blinked. She almost cried. Somewhere, Asha was probably doing the same. Lenora broke the spell, and the bat flew away.

Day Six - Skeleton

A poem/short story called SKELETON. “Please, come inside. You’re soaked to the bone!” That was an interesting turn of phrase. It must simply be a common idiom, these days. “Thank you.” I walked inside and looked around. There were piles of secrets and wonders the likes of which I’d never seen. This woman was opening her world to me, while mine couldn’t be more closed. “What is that?” I asked with a cautious point to an object in the corner of the coveted room. “Oh, that? It’s just a Halloween decoration, sorry. Did it frighten you?” I shook my head. I thought to ask about ‘Halloween’, but her smile told everything. It was something wonderful. “Do you need to make a call? Family, or a friend?” I shook my head. Her smile, which had lit up the room, turned ever so slightly downward. “I mean, yes. I have someone.” Her smile returned, and if I could, I would’ve breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, good. Let me grab the phone for you.” She walked into an adjoining room and returned with a small object. I felt like a child again. Everything was so new. “Sorry, the cord doesn’t reach very far.” The object she held seemed to be tethered to the wall. What an odd design. I walked over and gently took the object into my hand. This must be the ‘phone’. She walked away, and I almost stopped her. “I’ll give you some privacy.” That was the last thing I wanted. Still, I held the ‘phone’ in my hand, unsure of what to do now that I was alone again. Perhaps I could start by asking for help. “Excuse me. I’ve never…” The casualness with which she retrieved the item made me reconsider my confession. “I don’t know what to do.” She just smiled. For once, I smiled back.

Day Three - Dread

A poem called DREAD. “It’s just a painting.” Maybe that’s what you see. “It’s a pretty painting, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something to-” To what? Cry about? “I’m sorry. It’s important to you.” Hm. That’s one way to put it. “What does it make you feel, then? When you look at this?” I stare for a long time. The washed out shipyard. The shadows on the water. I breathe in deeply. “It makes me feel…” That tiny orange dot. I smile, but it’s not intentional. It’s something else, someone else’s emotion, plucked raw and plastered onto my face where it doesn’t fit. It doesn’t belong. But my face doesn’t change. “Dread.”

Day Two - Witch

A Poem called Witch. Asha stared into the cauldron, searching for anything: an answer, a solution, a remedy… At this point, she would even accept a question. A question would be some reply greater than this struggle against nothing at all. She took a deep breath and tried to recall the words once more. She quickly gave up, because who knows their Latin like that? High Priestess did, of course. Asha did not. She turned to other avenues, like a car searching for parking; The cauldron room was downtown New York City. Her eyes ran circles and further circles over useless and further useless garbage. Why did she even join a coven? Peer pressure? She laughed that away. You need peers to be pressured by them. She just wanted to be involved in something greater than herself: a concept as noble as it was naive. Well, she got what she wanted. She was involved as you could be now. Think, Asha, think. Then it hit her like a bullet. She started scrambling, clambering, falling over herself in a whirlwind. The book. Every spell, incantation, possible utterance in front of this stupid pot- it was all in the fucking book! She just needed to open it, flip the pages, drop it into the cauldron She was not supposed to drop it into the cauldron. She blinked. She cried. Somewhere, High Priestess had probably already died. Asha was never joining a club again.

Day One - Fear

A poem titled FEAR. No one is actually afraid of the dark. Each of us spends more than a third of our lives in darkness. Every time we blink, every time we sleep. Of course, that’s not what people mean when they say they’re ‘afraid of the dark.’ But even then, when people say that, they don’t mean the dark itself. They mean what might be in it. What they’re really afraid of is the unknown. The unseen. The unheard. The invisible. Maybe they should bring a light? If the only thing you’re afraid of is the dark, identifying a rabid animal in the dark is simple. If push comes to shove, you can kick it. But that third of our lives asleep, that’s what scares me. When I sleep, I am unseen, unheard, and invisible. When I dream, I am afraid of what might be in it. And in that darkness, there is no light to save me, and no rabid dog to kick.
