It's #WIPWednesday, and I actually have something today! My #OFMDBB2025 fic is coming along nicely (surprisingly), so have a peek of hungover Stede holding on to his marriage certificate. Only problem is he doesn't remember getting married.
He’s married. Married. No, this has to be a joke. Some elaborate prank. A poorly timed surprise with too much commitment and not nearly enough punchline. A beat passes, and he lets out a weak, nervous laugh that doesn't make it past his throat. It's the kind of thing Lucius might have dreamed up – if he were here, and if this were April Fool's, and if the universe had a shred of mercy. But Lucius is still in Oregon. And he isn't cruel. He's dramatic, yes. Snarky, absolutely. But never mean-spirited, and certainly not the kind to blindside Stede like this. Still, Stede clings to the thought because it's easier than facing what the document in his hands implies. It has all the weight of being real – thick paper, official language, clean lines, and confident signatures. The kind of thing you frame above wedding photos, not laugh off. His pulse thunders in his ears. He shifts on the couch, legs stiff, suit rumpled, the envelope sitting in his lap like a weight. The lobby hums around him with footsteps, quiet conversations, the distant ding of the elevator – all too normal for a moment that feels like reality is cracking around him. He reads the name again. The officiant's signature. The date. His mouth goes dry. Then, barely audible, to no one in particular: "Who the hell is Edward Teach?"

A small orange-brown leaf floated down, zig-zagging on the breeze, and landed in Ed’s hair. It must have been the very last as every tree above them was completely bare. Stede reached out to pluck it free but thought better of it. “Oop, you’ve got a little—in your hair. A leaf, in fact,” he said, gesturing. “Nope, it’s—over to the left. My left—your right.” Ed gave up trying to feel for it with his fingertips. He bent forward and gave his head a dramatic shake, his hair cascading like a mane, then snapped upright—his hair flipping back down with effortless flair. “Did I get it?” he asked. Stede nodded, his gaze flicking from Ed’s eyes to the leaf still firmly nestled in his crown, then back again. “You got it,” he said softly.

#WIPWednesday babes. Have another snip of my #OFMDBB2025 in which Stede calls on Lucius for help picking an outfit for a ‘maybe’ date.
"Okay, so let's do something fun but casual. Where are those jeans? The sinfully skinny ones?" "These?" Stede clarifies, pulling out his favourite soft blue pair from the pile on the bed and holding them out so Lucius can see. "Yesss, put those on." "What, now?" "Yes Stede! Now." Stede carefully sets his phone screen-down on his bedside table, ignoring Lucius' protest (‘rude') and hurries, as much as he can, to pull the jeans on. "Alright," Stede says, scooping the phone up again. "What else?" Together they rummage through the pile, Lucius not troubling himself to keep some of his more scathing opinions of Stede's suggestions to himself. It's not a business meeting, Stede! Do you actually want to get laid? In the end they settle for a short sleeve shirt with a palm tree pattern against a dark background. Lucius assesses the final look with a highly critical eye. “Hmm, pop another button…” Stede does as instructed. “Yeah, one more…” “For goodness sake, Lucius,” Stede huffs, though he unfastens another button all the same, revealing far more chest than he usually would. “What’s the verdict?” he asks, holding his arms out wide like a child and doing a little turn on the spot so Lucius can see the full effect. “Okay, but wouldn’t it be crazy if I was, like, suddenly into you?” “Right,” Stede tuts and moves towards his phone where it’s propped on the dresser to end the call. He’s had quite enough of him for one day. “No! I’m sorry! I love you!” Lucius cries quickly as Stede closes in. “You look super hot. Go get some, babe! Byyyyyyye!”
