The Hinodeya Widow by Kitagawa Umataro, highly regarded Ukiyo-e artist. Probably late 1790s. This type of print is mostly known as bijin-ga ōkubi-e, portrait print of a beautiful woman. The shogunate banned such prints for 8 years in 1800. Supposedly Umataro's work influenced French Impressionists.

More big heads! These are all various cinematic renderings of the ōkubi yokai (which now I feel stupid for not realizing this is probably where Big Head In A Room started)

Woman Drying Her Hands (from the series Ten Aspects of the Physiognomy of Women), Kitagawa Utamaro, c. 1793, Cleveland Museum of Art: Japanese Art
Published by the visionary Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the print exemplifies Utamaro’s pioneering refinement of ōkubi-e ("large-head pictures"), a dramatic shift in ukiyo-e portraiture that abandoned full-length compositions in favor of close-up busts. By cropping the frame, Utamaro captures an fleeting, unposed moment of daily life: a young woman turning slightly as she carefully dries her fingers with a cloth (tenugui) after washing. The composition is set against a warm, muted red-ochre background—originally enhanced with pulverized mica (mica-zuri) to create a subtle, shimmering luster that isolates the figure and grants her physical presence an immediate, luminous intimacy. The print offers an extraordinary window into late 18th-century Edo sartorial culture and aesthetics. The woman wears a light summer robe (yukata or unlined kimono) adorned with a fine green lattice of undulating waves enclosing stylized floral roundels, contrasted by a lower garment featuring bold, graphic palm-frond patterns. Utamaro deliberately depicts the robe slipping loosely from her shoulders, exposing the nape of her neck (unaji) and collarbone—an element that held profound erotic and aesthetic resonance in Edo urban culture, where subtle, unstudied revealing of skin was prized over overt nudity. Her high-piled hair is secured with a simple comb (kushi) and a delicate hairpin (kanzashi), framed by razor-thin, individually carved hairline strands (ukename) that showcase the pinnacle of woodblock carving technique (horishi).

Ukiyo-e meets Evangelion — "Eva Ukiyo-e: Kabuki Series" arrives March 30. Inspired by "Kabuki Symphony No. 9 — Evangelion", 7 works reimagining Eva through the ukiyo-e tradition — from the fateful meeting of Kaworu and Shinji to ōkubi-e portraits and senjafuda for each Eva unit.
Eva Ukiyo-e "Eva Kabuki-e: Sukuse no Yukiai (Fateful Meeting)". Framed ukiyo-e print in a black frame. Against a crimson sunset over rippling water, a figure in white robes floats on the left while a figure in a purple kimono stands on rocks to the right. Birds fly against a golden crescent moon in the upper right. ©khara Eva Ukiyo-e "Eva Kabuki Ōkubi-e: Kaworu Nagisa". Framed ukiyo-e portrait in a light wood frame. A figure with spiky silver hair and red kumadori face paint around the eyes gazes forward, one hand raised to the shoulder, wearing a dark garment open at the chest. ©khara Eva Ukiyo-e "Eva Kabuki Ōkubi-e: Shinji Ikari". Framed ukiyo-e portrait in a light wood frame. A young person in a pink-purple kimono adjusts a tall black eboshi hat with both hands, expression serious and inward. ©khara Eva Ukiyo-e "Eva Kabuki Senjafuda: Set of 3". Three narrow vertical prints displayed together in a single dark ornate frame. Each features the letters "EVA" at the top in red, green, and yellow respectively, above a stylised mask in kumadori colours — red, purple-green, and gold — followed by bold black characters at the bottom. ©khara

Man, I wish I enjoyed this more on my first viewing. I think I would’ve if the court intrigue had been more of a framing device for ayokai anthology film. But the story of the rokurokubi and the ōkubi that shows up at the end are pure nightmare fuel.
