Every time I rewatch an older show I am mad about this again. Writing has so much room to breathe! The characters can develop!
I've been rewatching old network shows and you know what, i'm gonna say it, i miss 23 ep seasons. I do!! Let me sit with stuff, give me some filler eps, let me have eps that are just there to build character moments, i miss it!!
The Penguin is really good, I’m glad I watched it, but my god am I fucking over the eight episode miniseries format. Leads to writing problems and pacing problems every time.

There seems to a theme of youth vs age here. Younger characters are set opposite older characters, older characters have to deal with the unfinished battles of their ancestors. Pippin having difficult dealings with Denethor, and then finding kinship among the boys still left in Gondor.

this is an older, pulpier conceit, i think, and also the reason those new poirot movies are so, so bad. they are more concerned with giving his mustache an origin story (A REAL THING) than with the new characters in the current mystery!
