This afternoon I tracked NASA’s AQUA with the Mighty Little Dish (MLD) mounted on the Pelco/OnStep mount and got some fairly decent results considering the small aperture of my dish.

Wow! I was able to work on my 🔭 tonight, and get it all back together. My OnStep board is working great! On top of that, after a quick collimation, I now have ROUND STARS in the corners of my images. No more bats! 🤣
I have a couple more things to do before I can image again, but this is great! 1/3

3 - Inside the mount there is a HOME sensor for both axis. That is aligned to the mount's AZ = 0 (north) and ALT = 0 degrees. The OnStep controller can 'find' home automatically like a CNC machine does. Its an optical sensor with an occulting disk. ⬇️

Really happy with the progress on my G11 OnStep mod. After some additional tweaks and PEC training tonight, it's happily tracking this (admittedly northern) target between 0.4 and 0.5 arc-second RMS. #astronomy #astrophotography

The mount I am upgrading is a dinosaur, but OnStep & some Arduino compatible electronics (ESP32 board & stepper shield) should be adaptable to pretty much anything, and talks a standard-ish serial protocol most Astro software understands

The original job was validating my Linux tracking chain: Gpredict → rotctld → Hamlib INDI → OnStep.
New failsafe code now rejects stale or missing position data instead of allowing a bad command to reach the mount with proper OnStep/INDI integration finally. ⬇️

In my system I have two options and I choose both. A precise mechanical system of levelling and also the ability to astronomically align. OnStep does the calculations to correct for this with a 3+ star alignment. So now you know why I had a telescope attached to the prototype.
