100%. School teams are increasingly the domain of club athletes - and high end youth sports is five figure a year in costs (e.g. OPDL soccer is >$6-$7k before travel, tournaments, etc.)… meanwhile teachers are burning out under the load and class sizes and underfunding, so less likely to volunteer.

Congrats to Elle in Grade 8! Along with her Vaughan Soccer Club 2012 OPDL team, she won the FTF Fall Showdown soccer tournament last weekend, beating out 12 teams to finish in first place.

Some thoughts, having coached/GK coached (and played GK) OPDL/League1/Uni/Provincials so on.
Agree on too early selection/height filtering, but also specialization. Kids shouldn't be full time any position at 10-11 years old. You end up with kids who are mediocre goalkeepers and shit players.

Sorry but I strongly disagree. Most OPDL keepers are developed in house with a few exceptions. A good keeper at Whitby isn't likely going to transfer to Woodbridge in the same way an outfield player would.

If you develop a kid on the shorter side at U13 who has the footwork, the positioning, the agility, etc., and they have a later growth spurt at 16-17, you have the potential of having an elite keeper. But so many OPDL teams discriminate against having shorter, more agile keepers! In 2025!!

In OPDL, for example, even though it costs ~ the same to register across all clubs, certain ones, like Woodbridge and Vaughan, will always have better resources, better coaching, and thereby attract more talented kids, and they win pretty much every year (with exceptions).
