An eye-level studio photograph documents a rare, ancient gilded bronze or gold crown from the mid-Kofun Period (around the 5th century AD), excavated from Ibaraki, Japan. The crown is displayed isolated against a completely black background, which highlights its intricate profile and aged texture. The artifact consists of a wide, open-backed circular band that dips downward in a gentle V-shape at its front center. The main body of the band features incredibly detailed, openwork openwork cutouts forming a delicate, lace-like scrollwork or arabesque vine pattern. Dozens of small, circular spangles or spangle-like ornaments dangling from fine wire are attached across this openwork, originally designed to shimmer and catch the light when worn. At the dip in the front center, a small vertical element shaped like a stylized three-pronged flame or trident stands upright, positioned directly above a small, square projecting plate. The most remarkable feature is the crown's upper rim, which is lined with a series of flat, silhouette-style figural reliefs representing standing horses. These stylized animal cutouts face toward the center from both sides, shown in profile with thick bodies, short legs, and distinctively shaped heads and manes. The entire artifact shows significant signs of antiquity, with a dark, mottled patina consisting of oxidized copper-green crusts, earthy reddish-brown tarnish, and remnants of the original golden gilding peeking through the worn surfaces. The lighting is direct and focused on the front of the object, casting subtle shadows within the openwork gaps and emphasizing the unique, aristocratic craftsmanship of Kofun-period metalwork.
