#orbits
Getting *fancy* with orbits, huh?
Over the past 5 years the Lucy spacecraft flew by 3 asteroids. Over the next 7 years it will visit 8 more, focusing on the mysterious "Trojan" asteroids that share an orbit with Jupiter.

Lucy will set a record for the most objects ever visited by one spacecraft. 🧪🔭

Silently the orbits spin,
If they hold your attention
This #spiral wins.

Lula nuked the betting apps from orbits.

Remember what it was like watching football on Sunday and not hearing about how players' performance was impacting Draft Kings and Fan Duel users? We can have that again, gente.

The kind of people who end up in the orbits of people who wield institutional clout and power are probably not ones with tremendous defense instincts or self-respect, so it just ends up the people who tolerate this are the ones who move up.

🚀 Lift Off! China's second Kinetica-2 rocket successfully launched 18 SpaceSail satellites from Jiuquan on 3 November 2026 at 00:15 UTC. All 18 satellites reportedly reached their intended orbits and are operating normally.

The Three Body Orbits website is an atlas of some of the thousands of stable three-body orbits. You can watch each system play itself out in a wide variety of different trajectories and complexities or even help find a new solution. [kottke.org]
Three-Body Orbits
There are no generalized solutions to the three-body problem. Say you have three planets orbiting each other: it’s impossible to calculate how they will move using Newton’s laws of motion and gravity. Unli

For example:
1. Radio telescopes aren't limited to night-time observing, so prioritising dusk/dawn orbits doesn't lessen the impact
2. These satellites communicate at "permitted" radio frequencies, but their rapid orbits can Doppler-shift the emission to other frequencies (where we do astronomy)

Any time I am inconvenienced, I think "what if your wife orbits my dick" and I don't really know why lol

Unsolvable like predicting movements of three solar bodies in eachother’s orbits

given to understand that most weapons are designed to intercept in low-to-medium orbits, but it's the stuff in high geosynch orbits that would have the worst cascade effect. Dunno how many satellites you could shoot down before Putin freaks out about all the missiles and starts a nuclear war though

i mean technically we all are as the earth orbits the sun, but no not independently…yet

🎃 “Halloween fireballs” are real! The Taurid meteor showers, active around Halloween, come from debris shed by Comet Encke, which circles the sun every 3.3 years, one of the shortest known comet orbits.

Orbits so close
They’re destined
To succumb
To common gravity.
To pull away
From mortal toil
And ascend to
What they’re meant to be.

Could also be a plane (mechanical) issue, not unusual to do orbits like that while running the checklists for return to airport.

We were taught that Earth orbits the Sun in a closed circle. In reality, Earth has never returned to the same point in space once in 4.5 billion years.
Right now, the Sun is carrying Earth and every planet around the center of the...
