**Bouchra** (trailer) is a semi-autobiographical lesbian computer-animated art project by Meriem Bennani along with Orian Barki and Ayla Mrabet. Originally about 70 minutes long, it was exhibited as part of an installation in Milan in 2024. Bennani later added more content to make it 82 minutes, screening it at international film festivals until it reached online streaming in September 2026. Bennani is a Moroccan artist in New York City who had been gradually learning animation, a process that sped up during the Covid pandemic with the help of her collaborator Orian Barki. Together they started making a series of eight shorts called 2 Lizards. By the time the pandemic was over and she wanted to try making a film, she hadn't practiced animating humans, so that's why _Bouchra_ has anthropomorphic animals. The character of Bouchra, representing Bennani herself, is a jackal. The setting flips between New York and Morocco, revolving around Bouchra's relationship with her mother, after coming out to her nine years earlier. The film part of the art project was originally dedicated to her, titled **_For Aicha_**. There are two lesbian sex scenes, passionate without being revealing; it's not R-rated. There's almost no conflict, the pace is slow, it's very slice-of-life. I'm not sure if it'll interest most furry fans except as an art-house piece. It's subtitled in English, with spoken dialogue in English, French, and Moroccan Arabic. read more

Bouchra is a Moroccan filmmaker in New York, writing an autobiographical film that keeps folding back into the life it is drawn from. Bouchra is also a coyote, in a city of anthropomorphic animals rendered in nearly photoreal rooms and streets. Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki's feature _Bouchra_ has been streaming on MUBI since September 12. 0:00 /1:26 1× __2 Lizards__ : Episode 1 (2020), the series __Bouchra__ grew from — silent here; the full episode with sound is on Artforum’s Vimeo. The film's dialogue comes from real phone calls and letters, with characters voiced by the directors' friends and family playing versions of themselves — documentary raw material wearing an animated body. Across 83 minutes, the film moves between New York and Casablanca, between the character's everyday releases and a mother's unresolved feelings about the character's queerness. It landed its U.S. premiere in Currents at the 63rd New York Film Festival. _Bouchra_ grew out of _2 Lizards_ , the series Bennani and Barki released serially on Instagram in the first weeks of lockdown in 2020—two computer-generated lizards moving through an emptied New York, swiftly picked up and published by Artforum. What was a coping mechanism at reel length is now a feature-length grammar: rig a body, render a city, and let real voices drive it. Bennani's practice runs on the same toolchain as any studio shipping a AAA open world—3D animation, avatar-driven character work, photoreal environments — pointed at diaspora, family, and memory instead of traversal. Machinima logic without the game underneath: the avatar turns out to be autofiction, because everyone involved is already playing a version of themselves. Animation made with game tools, cinema made from avatars — Killscreen watches that border so you don’t have to. The free newsletter delivers it. Get the newsletter
