The article from ComicBook.com highlights five episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series that effectively handled time travel concepts without getting bogged down in complex rules. The author, Dennis Limmer, explains that these episodes succeeded because they focused on the characters' challenges rather than over-explaining the science. The first episode discussed is 'Tomorrow Is Yesterday,' where the Enterprise accidentally travels to the 20th century and must avoid altering history. Next is 'Assignment: Earth,' which introduces Gary Seven, an agent from the future sent to protect humanity, and explores whether interfering with history could worsen Earth's future. 'All Our Yesterdays' takes time travel to a deeper level, showing how characters can be changed by their exposure to different historical periods. 'The Naked Time' is noted for its unconventional use of time manipulation as a solution to a crisis, where the Enterprise is sent backward in time to correct a mistake. Finally, 'The City on the Edge of Forever' is highlighted as the most iconic time travel episode, where Kirk must choose between saving a woman he loves and preserving the future. The article emphasizes that Star Trek used time travel not as a gimmick but as a way to test characters' choices and the consequences of knowing the future. The author concludes that these episodes remain memorable because they focus on personal stakes rather than technical explanations, making time travel a meaningful narrative device rather than just a plot convenience. The piece is part of ComicBook.com's coverage of Star Trek's 60th anniversary, connecting to recent events like Pluto TV's celebration of the franchise.
