#birdoftheday #RedandBlack #LongBeaks The Crested Oropendola has red rump feathers, black body, and long beak. A female Flame Rumped Tanager shows its colors. A male Golden Olive Woodpecker shows its colors and beak. A Rufous Tailed Hummingbird's beak is about 30% of its body length.

#birds #birdoftheday Can't find today's theme, but I did find 9 species on my walk this morning: Spectacled Parrotlet/Slate Throated Redstart/Andean Motmot/Palm Tanager/Scrub Tanager/Golden Tanager/Rusty Margined Flycatcher/Blue Gray Tanager/Crested Oropendola.

southeastern Mexico, C America
Breed in large colonies with 100 hanging nests
Colony is ruled by 1 Dominant alpha male who mates with the 90% of the females.
All the females build the nests, incubate, feed and raise the chicks.
The male ONLY Defends his colony of females

On the third pic on the tree on the right there's a bunch of hanging nests from those oropendola birds. I'd seen em in books and such before but never in person so that was pretty cool. There were a lot of them flying around too!
