The Bears are wild because they had about 10 quarterbacks in a row that could roughly be described as Ortonesque

Enjoyed this unquantifiable, funny book. Joe Ortonesque saucy satire & (maybe) allegory. Testament to Spark’s versatility either way.
Reading deep again 📕

There's something nicely Ortonesque about Peter Purves being lured to a Leicester cinema under false pretences.

Acting flashback. One of my favourite roles to play was as Joe Orton in “Ortonesque” (now renamed “Mr and Mrs Orton”) in it’s short tour.

It’s a role I’d love to reprise one day!

RIP Prunella Scales. My favourite performance of yours was this BBC version of Joe Orton’s What The Butler Saw alongside Timothy West. It is wonderful.

Maxine Peake to play all three in a surprisingly violent Ortonesque story set in April 2013. There is tarpaulin. Running gag around the mounting horror with which people encounter Truss's Wizard-of-Oz-derived ringtone as events accelerate

Some pictures from the 2023 mini tour of “Ortonesque” where I played the tragic gay 60’s playwright Joe Orton.

Joe Ortonesque is a very apt description! Have you read William Trevor’s THE CHILDREN OF DYNMOUTH? I always think of the protagonist, Timothy Gedge, as a younger version of Dougal Douglas from the Spark.

It's an excellent film - Ortonesque both in its darkness and in the relentlessly mannered dialogue. Also, features a young Michael Kitchen (as Bungabine) and is plainly the source of the "reading the register" routine Richard Curtis wrote for Rowan Atkinson.
Can't go far wrong with a film rec from @andrewmale.bsky.social. Watched Unman, Wittering and Zigo (1971), a savage private school shocker starring David Hemmings as the new teacher contending with the Class From Hell (who one assumes will go on to lead the country). Horrible. I loved it...

Timothy West has died, and UK TV is obsessed with his several portrayals of Churchill. Instead, I offer you this - his role as Dr Rance in Joe Orton’s What The Butler Saw. You may never see another Orton play, take 90 minutes and do yourself a favour!

(1/2) John Kingsley “Joe” Orton (1 January 1933 – 9 August 1967) was an English playwright & author. He shocked & amused audiences with his scandalous black comedies. The adjective Ortonesque is sometimes used to refer to work characterized by a similarly dark yet farcical cynicism.

Poverty innit. True fans are being priced out of the game. Their always being in the pub is actually Ortonesque commentary on the tragedy of working class football clubs becoming the playthings of billionaires.

Probably.
