Just finished updating my review on the evolution and fossil record of the eared seals (Otariidae) given the new paper that came out on the early Pleistocene Otaria josefinae from Peru 😅 #blog #paleo #paleontology 🦖🐬🧪 Read it here:

Steller sea lions are the largest member of the family Otariidae, the “eared seals.”

They're also one of the species threatened by the Trump's latest push to open more than 100 million acres off the coast of #Alaska to highly destructive seabed mining.

So cool!

The main way to identify a phocidae (seal) from an otariidae (sea lion) is by locomotion. Seals move mainly with their hind flippers, while sea lions swim mostly with their front flippers. They can also rotate them while walking on land. Seals can't, they're potatoes

here's my pinniped joke

sea lion: yo did you hear that
seal, sitting next to him: no
