For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Fall of Otrar (1991), a Kazakh historical epic centering on Genghis Khan’s siege of the city of Otrar in 1218. The Mongol Empire sees the city as the gateway to western lands; a spy in the Khan’s court tries to warn the neighboring lands of the Mongols’ plans to expand, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Will Otrar manage to rpeel the onslaught anyway? Judging from the title, I am guessing no, but we will see. Reviews often compare this film to the works of Akira Kurosawa and Andrei Tarkovsky. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Ardak Amirkulov; it is also the highest-rated Kazakh film on Letterboxd, and will be the first Kazakh film ever shown on Blorptube. After that is Of Human Bondage (1934), a romance about a young medical student (Leslie Howard) who becomes infatuated with a waitress, played by Bette Davis in her star-making role. Uh-oh, she’s a cold, cynical, unfeeling, and dangerous woman who uses him only when necessary and abandons him without a thought. The protagonist repeatedly accommodates her manipulative behavior, only to fall further into ruin each time. Will they find true love anyway? We’ll find out soon enough… Director John Cromwell is otherwise best-known for the WW2 drama Since You Went Away (1944), which we have not yet watched on the ‘tube. We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here: blorp.bot.nu/o/visual_cuisine Be there, comrades! # Letterboxd: * The Fall of Otrar: letterboxd.com/film/the-fall-of-otrar/ * Of Human Bondage: letterboxd.com/film/of-human-bondage/ # Doesthedogdie.com links: * The Fall of Otrar: www.imdb.com/title/tt0104224/parentalguide/ * Of Human Bondage: www.imdb.com/title/tt0025586/parentalguide/ # CWs for The Fall of Otrar: * Nudity. * Objectification of female characters. * Blood and gore. * War crimes. * Stabbing. * Beatings. * Decapitation. * Dismemberment. # CWs for Of Human Bondage: * Nudity. * Objectification of female characters. * Misogyny. * Alcohol. * Smoking. * Nervous breakdown. * Screaming. * Destruction of priceless artifact. # Links to movies: * The Fall of Otrar: tankie.tube/w/bSJUFEKyKJTBc5rbf9XiNn * Of Human Bondage: tankie.tube/w/tphmGfFGy77a8hYaJwNkgq
