🇫🇮 #Finland has today officially withdrawn from the #OttawaConvention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines.

The country's government made the corresponding decision back in July, and it has now come into force. Finland explained its decision by the deteriorating global security situation.👇

No to landmines!

90% des victimes des mines antipersonnelles sont des civils, des enfants.

Les civils doivent être protégés dans les conflits armés.
Avec les mines antipersonnelles, ils deviennent une cible.
Et ce pendant des décennies après la fin du conflit.

NEW: Over 600 people, including children, have been killed or injured by landmines and explosive remnants of war across Syria since December 2024.

Without urgent, nationwide clearance efforts, more civilians returning home will be injured and killed.

Finland to withdraw from landmine treaty because Russia poses a "long-term threat"

And even those Finnish politicians who talk about the international political repercussions of a withdrawal do so mostly in terms of "Finland's reputation" - not in terms of how the #OttawaConvention very tangibly protects civilians worldwide, particularly in the Global South.

We strongly condemns #Latvia’s hasty and misguided decision to withdraw from the Mine Ban Treaty.

This reckless step marks a serious setback to global humanitarian disarmament efforts and puts civilian lives at risk.

#Switzerland is concerned by recent withdrawals from the #OttawaConvention. Mines kill and maim indiscriminately, causing devastating human and economic impacts long after conflicts end. We urge States Parties to uphold this vital instrument and its procedures.
