Eastern bluebirds check out a nest box for winter shelter and nighttime roosting. (Some bluebirds overwinter in Michigan.)

Our winter bird build-up continues. Bald Eagles nest in these parts, but many more overwinter along our open rivers and waters. #birds #AB

#GardensHour November includes raking up the beautiful Japanese Maple leaves that I like to put in the garden beds overwinter ♥️🍁

I hope this Black and White Warbler overwinters!

It has already stuck it out through one of our storms and had plenty of sunny days to travel south

But it seems this first year bird has found itself suitable habitat to overwinter in our patch!

It's certainly that time of year! Harmonia axyridis likes to overwinter in buildings the most.

As they overwinter as adults, I think they are likely to crawl into whatever cracks and crevices are available, including under tree bark.

Saw this cute Woolly Bear caterpillar, larval form of the Isabella Tiger Moth, crossing the road.. This little guy can run fast with those tiny legs!! Anyway, a helping hand to get to the bush to overwinter under leaf litter or logs.

Or, just leave the leaves for the insects. They overwinter under there.

2/2 Attached is a guide to the meanings of the caterpillar's colors. Woolly bear caterpillars are one of many caterpillars and butterflies that overwinter in leaf litter, which is a great reason to please leave the leaves. #folklore #Autumn #pollinators #WyrdWednesday #winter

Definitely The Gem, a female, I believe, based on markings. You can see this one has lots of scales missing from its wings, which is hardly surprising after it has presumably flown in from The Continent. There is a chance that it emerged here as offspring of earlier migrants, but it won't overwinter

Decided to rake some enrichment into the enclosure.

(Don’t worry, raking plenty of the rest of the yard into the edges of the woods on the other side where many bugs will safely overwinter)

They overwinter where I live in North Wales as it’s a super mild microclimate, there’s rarely a ground frost 🌼💛

Not sure how the ones at Green-Wood overwinter, but the ones over on the Palisades in New Jersey like to build nests on top of transformers on utility poles to stay warm. This unfortunately causes a significant number of fires and power outages.

Boxelder bugs overwinter as adults in sheltered spots, buildings included. Spotted lanternflies skip that: adults die at hard frost and the next generation waits as gray mud-smear egg masses on bark, stone and fence posts.

Oh also ate my final (tiny) strawberry yesterday, though they have not yielded much recently. Plants are covered to see if they can overwinter

> dragged [ leaves] back to the woods.

Where the insects hiding in them will overwinter,
and the decomposers can add their carbon to the soil.

Thank you.

I had a couple Sungold plants overwinter completely!

I read that bumblebees you see now are next year's queens looking for a somewhere to build a nest/overwinter. And that's why we should make sure we have late flowering plants so they have somewhere to eat. Your marigolds sound like the best place for them. 🐝 💛

Mourning cloaks ...

Hi AILA, yeah they are definitely Harlequins. There are millions around at the moment, they tend to come together this time of year in large congregations and look for somewhere nice to overwinter.

Mine’s in a pot so it’ll be going in the shed to overwinter soon. Next year I’ll take cuttings and see if it survives in the herb border.

Did u know? This beaut' garden 🕷️ was living behind one of my 🐝hotels this summer. Now I've taken the hotels down to overwinter, you'd think it'd be homeless. But,it was only a quick hop for it to find a cosy corner behind a basket next door. With wildlife friendly gardens, more *mess*is more life. 🌍🕷️🌱🌿🇬🇧🌱🪲

Are you planting out cabbages now? I have some tiny ones in the greenhouse. Want sure whether to overwinter them in there or plant them out.
November 1, 2026 at 6:56 PM
Aw sorry, losing them sucks. We lost two hives after (I think) I left them with too much space to overwinter and I haven't reupped yet. It's tricky but such a delight when it's going well.

Have you tried topbar? Less honey but the bees are incredibly relaxed.

Two small tortoiseshell butterflies decided to overwinter in my daughter's room, but unfortunately they kept getting awoken now that we have the heating on. I looked it up, and you can keep them in a lined lunchbox in the fridge till spring. Hopefully they make it because my daughter's attached!
