#oxfords
I think oxfords look wrong when worn with anything except a suit. There are some rare exceptions. Bruce Boyer, a menswear writer that I greatly admire, looks great in everything, including oxfords with sport coats.

I think of his shoes as oxfords. That's it. That's my whole point.

For six months, I argued with the same five guys over the historical use of oxfords vs derbies. The term oxfords refers to the shoe on the left; derbies refer to the shoes on the right.

To understand the difference, we have to first know the terms "facings" and "vamp."

But they're bad for a more important reason. A dark worsted suit is a "serious suit." In sober colors like navy or gray, this is what you wear to serious occasions, such as business meetings. Or when you're leading the US Department of War.

The term facings refers to the part of the shoe that holds the shoelaces. On oxfords, the facings are sewn into the vamp (top of the shoe). On derbies, the facings are left on top of the vamp.

We seriously have to bring back those platform oxfords from the 70s

Most of the time, when I see oxfords worn in situations outside of a suit, it's on a very bad simulacra of classic men's style. Or worse, it's paired with jeans (truly gross). Has a very twee 2010 Tumblr vibe to the outfit.

My guess is that, even if you're not familiar with the language of men's clothing, you intuitively know some of these contours. If you were attending a funeral in a dark suit and could choose between these two shoes, which would you pick? Black oxfords or brown hiking boots?

On the forum, some argued that other elements of the shoe overrule its "oxfordness." For instance, if it's made from brown suede instead of black calfskin, and features details like punching (tiny holes on a brogue). I agree that the shoes on the left are less formal than the ones on the right.

Of course, you will also need the right accoutrements: a formal shirt with a pleated front, fly front, or pique bib; studs and cufflinks (if the shirt is designed to be worn with studs); a cummerbund or formal waistcoat; and proper shoes (e.g., opera pumps, patent oxfords).
