I know a bank where the wild thyme blows
Where oxlip and the nodding violet grows.
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine
With sweet musk roses and with eglantine.

- William Shakespeare
- A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Act II, Scene 1)
- spoken by the fairy king, Oberon.

"Praise all the things that might be fucked. The riverbanks. Flowers called wild pansy and thyme and oxlip. Fruitless visions. Clouds full fast. Athenians and handsome, strong Lysander. Praise the rivers and the fog."

A False Oxlip.
For #WildflowerHour #FavouritePlant.
(The hybrid of Primrose and Cowslip).
Seen in early April at Sheerhatch Wood, Beds.

#FavouritePlant of 2026 — Oxlip.
We’re very lucky to have these growing locally in ancient woodland. Flowering in March, even before our county flower, the Pasqueflower, they mark the start of the wildflower season for me.
And I still enjoy being told they’re Cowslips 😅

Meadowsweet smiled and replied, “And your own natural beauty is enhanced by the wood sorrel and oxlip in your garland, Sister. They #distract from the bald spots.”

It was hard work! I hadn't used any doubles until the last 9 letters! Luckily, they were what I needed. Oxlip X moods my best.

It's the beginning of Orchid madness in east Kent, so there's never enough time. Here are some of the things seen this week for #WildflowerHour:

For this week's #WildflowerHour #HedgerowChallenge, I spent a happy couple of hours searching an ancient VC29 hedgerow, and found 21 different species. The Wood Anemones were all over, unfortunately, but there was one remaining Oxlip (just!), and a few Early Purple orchids in bloom 🙂

There's also a false oxlip which is a cowslip/primrose hybrid.

According to Google, this is an oxlip. I’m familiar with cowslips, they grow like weeds here, but this is new to me. It’s like a high rise primrose 😁🌼😍
