Thrilled that my motion backing the principle of a #playground for #children in the city centre of Oxford received full support from Council on Monday. This was in response to the petition put forward by OxPlay with an excellent speech by @josieproc.bsky.social
Cllr Katherine Miles (LibDem, Summertown) proposes that the council agrees the principle of a city centre playground. “Children don’t get a vote, but we represent them. Having a place where they can let off steam would be fantastic. Every £1 invested in a playground brings £1.32 of social benefit.”

The consultation asks for feedback on the “goals and methods” of reimagining city centre streets. OxPlay says that although OCC proposes “public squares, widened pavements and seating, critically, playgrounds only get a passing mention”. Closing date is 23 March. letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/compf

Ah I've just been sent this one. Outside Town Hall with the legendary @katherinesmiles.bsky.social who fought so hard for this playground. Not in the picture, SO MANY parents who worked on this too but were looking after their kids so couldn't be in the chamber) #Oxplay #playground

Oxplay, the campaign for a playground in central Oxford welcomed this: “We are delighted & encouraged that Oxfordshire County Council is providing play spaces via pop up play events… attracting families is good for the city and good for business. We hope that this is progress to permanent fixtures."

Thank you to @josieproc.bsky.social #oxplay for keeping the city centre playground on the budget agenda and to all the people who signed the petition last year. You asked. We delivered!
At City Council budget meeting. I had a small speech and a large elephant to try and persuade council to vote for funds to inch the playground project forward. Now we wait for the vote. 🤞🤞🤞 Thanks to @libdemsoxon.bsky.social @oxfordlabour.bsky.social and Oxford Greens for their support.

Well done to all at Oxplay too.

I know money and place are going to be the next, and most difficult, hurdles but would be good to get advice from @makespaceforgirls.bsky.social early on. Might also help with funding if there is also a 'this will particularly benefit girls' slant to it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you for all the work you do to help make spaces available for girls.
Hopefully @oxfordcitycouncil.bsky.social and #oxfordshirecountycouncil realise #oxplay is serious about a city centre playground, and are thinking hard about where it might go that will support local independent businesses.

Ah thank you. I will take ANY space. But personally would love it to be 'away from the Westgate' to lend support to indie biz on the High (eg Hoyles) or Broad Street-y (but probs not precisely there). The hard work on finding funds and a location starts now. Also, Oxplay v much a team effort!
