"The toughest guy I ever met. He was the only actor I've ever been physically afraid of."

Not-so Fun Fact — Panic in the Streets:
In the dock chase scene, Jack Palance hits Richard Widmark on the head w/ his gun.
Palance used a rubber gun in rehearsal, but mistakenly used a real gun when filming.
Widmark was injured & unconscious for 20 minutes

Unfortunately, these are the only interesting neckties in the entire film.

Jack Palance's chin deserves its own screen credit. 😂

NYC is April of 2020 is this movie. Wow.

In the early months of COVID, we read painful stories of healthcare workers who couldn’t go home after their shifts, for fear of infecting loved ones. Reed’s need to camp out on the sleeping porch now has a ring of truth – and perhaps poignancy – that it didn’t have in 1950. #TheNoirCollective (1/2)

Love this lighting on the washers. Makes a lightning rod between them.

As we’ve seen (left), MacDonald loved using practical lighting when Palance was in the frame. Even when the lighting is faux-practical (right), look how MacDonald outlines Palance’s angular, almost cadaverous features: any wonder this film launched him to stardom? #TheNoirCollective

Truly gorgeous work!!!!!

The chase is on, an extraordinary showcase for Joe MacDonald: not a household name in noir circles, but – as we saw in Pickup on South Street and again here – someone who certainly should be. Dig all the crazy long shots, often with an object to the fore grounding our perspective. #TheNoirCollective

In the best running gag in the film, Blackie becomes convinced that the dead man must have “brought something in”. He did, of course, but not just contraband. #TheNoirCollective #PanicInTheStreets

Jack Palance, as the looming threat of danger of disease — his 6’4”stature over much shorter people, accentuating the point.
Brilliant.

Widmark starred in several Broadway shows before making the leap to Hollywood. In his last, S.N. Behrman’s DUNNIGAN’S DAUGHTER, he was part of an extraordinary ensemble that included Luther Adler, June Havoc, Dennis King & Jan Sterling. The director was none other than Elia Kazan. #TheNoirCollective

#PanicInTheStreets works today in all the ways that it worked in 1950. Widmark and Douglas are effectively paired; Kazan and MacDonald’s location shooting heightens the atmosphere, sense of dread and potential horror; and Jack Palance makes an electrifying screen debut. #TheNoirCollective (1/3)
