The site of Paquimé in Chihuahua, Mexico, was a vibrant multicultural centre during the 13th and 14th centuries AD.

Ancient DNA indicates the elites there consolidated power through close-relative mating and child sacrifice.

Adobe architecture from Paquimé 🇲🇽, the political and ritual centre of the pre-Columbian Mogollan culture during the 13th & 14th centuries AD. DNA analysis of a child burial suggests elites here practised close relative mating for ritual sacrifice.

Built in the thirteenth century A.D., Paquimé was the largest precolonial settlement in northwest Mexico. Scholars have suggested that migrants from Mesoamerica developed the city, but new DNA research suggests otherwise!

No las conocía, unas técnicas decorativas geométricas muy avanzadas. Tras leer sobre ellas, he descubierto las figuras de Paquimé (Casas Grandes) y son una delicia de ver también.

It's #InternationalChihuahuaAppreciationDay, but sadly none of the objects we care for feature this dog breed so please join us as we instead admire this beautiful jar from Paquimé in the state of Chihuahua. It's over 500 years old and the colours are so bright it looks like it was made yesterday.

ROH values of a child burial (Burial 23-8) at the pre-contact site of Paquimé, Mexico. ROH values indicate how closely related an individual's parents were. 23-8's high ROH values suggest their parents were more closely related than first cousins.

A copper turtle from the site of Paquimé, Mexico. It is a rattle that has a hollow interior, and its tail forms a loop, suggesting it was designed to be worn or hung as an ornament. Dated to 1200-1400 CE. #mexico #history #archeology

Since there is no evidence of the first settlers of Paquime, I took inspiration of the "Kachina" spirits, who are considered as the founders of Palatkwapi by the Hopis, to design the looks on this illustration.
