The παραβαλανεῖς (i.e. Parabalani) were a violent Christian militia used by early-Christian bishops (i.e. 1st-3rd centuries CE) as bodyguards and as a means to eradicate local opposition to power (e.g. Jewish hierarchies and Pagan academics) in Mediterranean areas.
