I've read an awful lot about parasitoidism but have never seen it in person, let alone in my garden!

They appear to all be dead (probably killed by the heatwave) so of course I'm now googling "how to preserve a caterpillar".

he just wants to observe, for now. he feels an inexplicable compulsion toward this man, like he's someone of great importance. his species is asexual, reproducing via parasitoidism, so he doesn't understand quite yet that he's attracted to him. he chalks it up to curiosity.

He was talking about parasitoidism (laying eggs on living animals so the young can eat them from the inside out)

Parasitoids! Those spiders are food for the baby wasps!

I know that doesn’t help but I geek out over parasitoidism because it’s so weird

Help settle a disagreement between @brendanoloughlin.bsky.social and I: how do you define parasitoidism?

It's parasitoidism, but it's uncommon in nature (it's usually insects). From an evolutionary perspective parasites' best interest is to keep the host alive, that's why we haven't been wiped out by a deadly viral epidemic yet: viruses gets less virulent over time or they would be wiped out with us.

I think the definition really only works for animals, and yes, the immature must be the feeding stage and it does need to kill in order for it to reach reproductive maturity. Altering host behavior is a useful adaptation but it's not a defining trait of parasitoidism.

many hate my gospel, but it is nevertheless true that this is the most Tsurumi thing that has ever appeared in a non-GK piece of media www.tumblr.com/parasitoidis...

Today we’re talking about one of evolution’s strangest tools: the ovipositor. Hymenoptera probably began as plant-feeders in the Permian. Parasitoidism evolved once in the Late Triassic. By ~142 Ma, some ovipositors became venomous stingers.
