My 19YO just called up to wish me a happy Parentalia, totally spontaneously. (Apparently her college Classics department is celebrating Lupercalia, which led her to thinking about the other holiday in context.) I sadly had to tell her it was really only for dead ancestors.

Parentalia * Feb. 13–21: Festival honoring our ancestors

The Roman poet Ovid writes:

Now ghostly spirits and the entombed dead wander,
Now the shadow feeds on the nourishment that's offered.
But it only lasts till there are no more days in the month…

Last day of Parentalia. A Roman mosaic found in Pompeii. In Roman city of Baetulo, ‘SIT TIBI TERRA LEVIS’ is read on many of the tombstones in Latin that translates as “let the earth be light to you.” #folklore #tradition

Anyone else spend days/weeks writing the perfect ritual script only to not feel like actually performing it when the date comes? I love writing/creating rituals but actually making myself do them is a whole lot of work. #witchsky #Hellenismos #familyday #parentalia

We view sarcophagi under museum lights, forgetting their true context. This #Antonine masterpiece from the via Aurelia Antica was made for a public funeral, then hidden in a dark tomb, seen only by lamplight during family festivals like the Parentalia. #SarcophagusSaturday #AncientBluesky 🏺 #Rome

Today is the Ides of February. In ancient Rome, today was the start of the Parentalia, the chief Roman festival of the dead which lasted until the Feralia on 21 February. FYI.

🪷 The #Parentalia or dies parentales is a 9-day Roman feast honoring family ancestors 13 Feb - 21 Feb, ending with the #Feralia & offerings to the dead. Ovid says you should also include homeless spirits. Make small pop-up temporary shrines at the curb to give them comfort. 🪷
